elderbear
Wired Story And as von Helton predicted - progress is being made in the private sector!!! NASA is still doing lab tests, but the Planetary Society is set to launch on a Russian sub-launched ICBM on June 21 (a very fitting date for a solar sail vehicle)!!! GorunNova
Yep... nice to have space travel out of the hands of governmental agency and in the hands of corporate interests! :D ... waitamin... (Just kidding... I know that's a non-profit organization, but I couldn't avoid that joke ^^')
Beawulf
I'm glad it will finally to tested, it seems like it was ages ago they came up with the concept. I think it's funny it is being launched from a submarine :D
Beawulf
why is june 21st significant? is it because it is during the window for launch of the discovery?
psheldrake1
A great leap into space. This could be the answer Von is looking for to get himself off the planet.
nuages
So it did launch!!!!!! but they aren't sure if it was a success. They lost it for awhile now they've gotten a couple weak signlans. Its possible its made it into an orbit just not the intended orbit. Check here for the latest updates. Hope this all goes well and that they are able to get the craft to gain higher and higher orbits. Sidenote: did you know that Bill Nye the Science Guy is the Vice President of the planetary society. juhan
ARE YOU SERIOUS?? Bill Nye the Science Guy VP? Thats so crazy it just might work... Its sad that the solar sail is lost again... Damn. A success would've motivated alot of ppl about this method of space travel. Two failures is just not very promising. =(
GeneralLee
why is june 21st significant? is it because it is during the window for launch of the discovery? I think it was because it's the first day of summer here in the northern hemisphere.
