underscore
Yeah, america was way more sensible with its policy towards their cultural history. It may stem from the fact that the USA is a newish country and doesnt have as much history as the UK, so they preserve what they do have more vigorously. I heard that american archaeology is way more painstaking and slow than the rest of the world.... maybe this stems from the same impulse...? Anyhow, in enterprise archer and his future chum make some kind of circuit to communicate with t'pol in the past, that got me thinking... in a thousand years time, future geeks will probably just open a small hole in time and archive EVERYTHING then. So if we never see a complete run (more than likely) at least someone will in 30 generations time..... :D OMG!! I just mentioned trek in a dr who thread. How evil am I?!?! coolcat13
I would say that I too would have that Heart attack if I found them .You would not be out of luck though because I would clasp onto them with my dying breaths and then you would all get to watch them after they pried them from my cold dead hands lol
trebor
Why wouldn't the BBC execs attempted to sell the older Who catalog to the open market instead of trashing it? Before the days of syndication, many TV series aired once and were sold to other stations to be aired ones or twice (and then they were required to destroy the copies). So 20 years later when people were asking if anyone still had the material, further destruction occurred because stations that had not gotten rid of the stuff originally were in breach of contract and were afraid of having to pay penalties (or go to court). So a lot of them got scared and destroyed what they had. A lot of recovered stuff comes from people who were fans and kept copies for themselves or mislabeled items or films put in the wrong cans. ** as for america, I am afraid they are worse ** Just consider that 98% of all the hundreds of thousands of pieces of warner brothers artwork (hand painted cartoon cells for bugs bunny, etc...) were simply put in boxes on the side of the curb waiting for the dump trucks to collect and mix with the trash... on the instruction of an accountant who saw no value in this work, just so that a warehouse could be reused. Also, many films are deteriorated and if it wasn't for the work of selfless individuals who work in restoration, many films would simply no longer exist. And we're not talking about silent films, just think that if some people at Lucasfilm hadn't convinced George to make the special editions, they wouldn't have discovered that the original StarWars was decomposing in it's box. :-)
Fenriswolf
It's truly saddening to read that, especially about the stills.
walker74
I know this is abit off topic... but couldn`t they recomple the missing episodes using the telesnaps... i know the telesnaps only comprise of 1 scene of film in a few but surely couldn`t you use 2days computer effects 2 somehow link them together... And most of the missing episode sound tracks have survived... I know i`m probably just wishing... because after all these years i don`t think many more of the lost episodes will be found... nuages
Our producer has produced a band the 9nth Doctor likes, he likes them so much he appeared uncredited in a film about them,,,,and in it plays a homless man who hands out a piece of philosophy that could so easily apply to Dr Who. how's that for cryptic :) Which band was this, and what film?? underscore
@ Walker 74 :: I agree that the least the beeb could do is spend time and money on making the most exact possible reconstructions of the lost stories. They could possibly use CGI to 'tweak the faces of the actors to more closely resemble the original actors (this might be a few years away in terms of their budget), they could shoot in black and white using authentic equipment and use the original scripts and existing audio recordings to keep acurate timing. they could even use the stills to accurately mirror the on screen action. I know this would be a labour of love and very time consuming, but frankly they owe us the viewers their continued existence and they owe us the fans a debt for screwing up our favorite show... yadda yadda. but it would be nice. Oh and mr walker, I wouldnt give up all hope on more material returning just yet. Edisons frankenstein was missing for most of the 20th century wasnt it :) I personally totally believe that there are a few more episodes here and there, maybe eve a complete story or two left to come back home yet. Wait and see. Time will tell. Consider this though: It is a documented fact so far as i can tell that missing material has been hung on to for 10 years in one case and longer in others before being returned to the BBC, whilst the owners knew exactly what they had. Whos to say that people arent still holding out? Im convinced they are. :)
coolcat13
I say do remakes . Revamp the old episodes using replacement actors and reshhot them . in color and modernised , there were some great episodes that would be way greater if they were redone

underscore
http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/cinema/features/quatermass.shtml have a look in, make a request, this slipped under the radar a bit, but it was supposed to be great!
trebor
Who do you reckon is hoarding the missing episodes? Turns out, I am. I just uncovered a box of VHS tapes labeled 'Doctor Who' featuring telesnaps of some 2nd doctor stories. One tape is in NTSC and it doesn't have an episode per say on it, but has some 'behind the scenes' footage of yetis. I need to fix my pal/ntsc transcoder so I can check the other 2 tapes and see if the quality is better than the avi ones that have been floating around the net. If so, I'll make some files to share. underscore
cool! is that the super 8 footage that was released on that 'doc matrix ' thing?
underscore
ive got about 15 minutes of color footage from the mind of evil. quality is a little ropey, a few ganerations from the source, but watchable none the less. I offered this to the archive years ago, but they werent very interested. dunno what its status is these days.
trebor
Never seen the 'doc matrix' thing, so I can't tell. I'll see about grabbing a sample from the NTSC tape and sharing that to see if there's interest.

underscore
Heres some grim aniversaries :: 17th july 1969 - dalek masterplan wiped 21st of july 1969 - the BBC starts to purge troughton episodes from the archive by erasing all master video tapes with a large electromagnet, for reuse on other programs. september first 1969 - faceless ones, abominable snowmen, web of fear, ice warriors, tomb of the cybermen; consigned to oblivion. early october - tenth planet episode 4, the enemy of the world
trebor
update: I haven't had the chance to go though all the matarial on the NTSC tape as it is made up of various stuff which I will need to compile a list from. The other tapes I have contained the following stuff: - The Web of fear (episode + telesnaps) - Wheel in space 3-6 - Dalek master Plan 5-10 - moonbase 2-4 - Invasion 8 - Faceless Ones 1 So I guess nothing really new as far as episodes, stuff most people probably have. I do have 1 very stange episode from Tom Baker: it's episode 1 from "the brain of morbius" and it has no sound effects, no music, just the studio sound. Very strange. I am holding on to that one and not wiping the tape out ;-) UPDATE #2 Found another box with a myriad of other Dr. Who stuff: - fan Dr. Who made episodes (from seattle) with a female Dr. - DWAS 10th anniversary tape (Panopticon VII) with Dr #3,5 & 6 - Ultimate Challenge with Dr. #7 + ace (quality low) - Return to Devils End (Myth makers) original PAL tape - Dimensions in time - really great copy with Sylvester McCoy promo If there's any interest in any of these, I will digitize them. underscore
cool! the morbius sans effects track sounds fun. I saw a davidson like this, I think it was kinda or the sequel, where hes playing these wind chime things and talking about the sound theyre making, which without the dub is a kind of monotone clunk...... it made me laugh anyway ; D
