BTW, the 'official' title of the first serial, AFAIK, is "100,000 B.C.".

You see this printed all over the place, but my question is if that is the official title why was the video released as "An Unearthly Child"? It would seem to me that the BBC would release it to video under the official title. Then again what do I know.

I think that, mostly because they had new titles each week, 'An Unearthly Child' (which referred to Susan) became better known to the public. Also, the novelization was published under the 'Unearthly Child' monicker. So, when they did the video-release, the BBC decided to use the much better known name, because "This is (recognizably) the first ever serial" was of course a big selling point.

I always found Hartnel's Doctor to be quite a charming fellow but prone to being really' date=' really, cantankerous.[/quote']

Charming, and oh so very handy with a rock.

(Spoiler Alert)

I am, of course, referring to the scene where the hurt caveman is hampering the travellers and the Doctor decides on his own medicine to get the group going again. Only Ian asking him him what he intends to do with the oversized pill makes him reconsider.

And, abducting people in your own space-time-ship when you are not even sure where you are going to land, and expect to never be able to get them back to their own time (nor planet, most likely)?

I downloaded this "series" (An Unearthly Child)a few weeks ago, but, had first downloaded the following one "The Daleks."

Well, I watched the first ep or "show" from The Daleks -

DrWho 002 - ep1 - The Dead Planet.avi

and it didn't make a great deal of sense to me, since it was "out of order."

Recently, I watched all of "An Unearthly Child" in order, and then the Daleks series in order, and am now glad I did.

I enjoyed seeing those old shows, and getting the history of the Doctor, when it all first started. I really liked Ian's character.

Thanks again for the idea, RSA, and for that well done first post in this thread here. And, to Fen and others, for having told me which eps to get, and all of the encouragment and background info.

yea the search for fire . These shows are good for thier time but I think it would be better to have started these shows from about episode 50 WarGames . by the time you get that far alot of what you see now will have been contradicted .I would at least only brush over a few of these older shows like The Dalek Invaion of Earth and Tomb of the Cybermen .maybe The Chase to show the Dalek capabilities back then

Glad youre enjoying it General Lee, personally Ive always loved the show but it wasnt until I watched the really early stuff when they became available on VHS did I start to see the bigger picture. To a kid of 5 with Pertwee and Baker I ddnt understand about the history until I wqas much older, they were just stories to me on a Saturday night.

I always find it good therapy when Im bored, sick or depressed. It never fails to make me feel better. Call it comfort TV.

Stickying is a good idea for each weeks episode thread. Ill also end my last post in here with a link to the next one, should keep everyone in the right place :) Cant wait to discuss The Daleks, brilliant story even after a million viewings lol
