weareborg
I know that technology like a comm badge is possible. A company has made soemthing like a comm badge where you ask for somebody by their name (that has already been programmed with their name+transmitter) and it connects straight to them and you talk like a walkie talkie. However, it only works in a small radius (for example in a small officer building) and is quite expensive. Also, transports have been achieved (yes -i'm not lying). But only with light rays and they have been transported about 30cm. I will dig up the internet articles about them for you to read as i have them bookmarked...somewhere :P. Anyway, i think star trek technology is possible, and as Furious said, it's just discovering them.
quosego
Don't worry, we'll have antimatter engines in no time :) It has got a lot more energy than nuclear power. (now we only have to make lots of antimatter, or harvest it and do something about those neutrinos) In antimatter-matter collisions, the entire rest mass of the particles is converted to energy. The energy per unit mass is about 10 orders of magnitude greater than chemical energy, and about 2 orders of magnitude greater than nuclear energy that can be liberated today using chemical reactions or nuclear fission/fusion respectively. The reaction of 1 kg of antimatter with 1 kg of matter would produce 1.8Ãâ€â€10^17 J of energy (by the equation E=mc²). In contrast, burning a kilogram of gasoline produces 4.2Ãâ€â€10^7 J, and nuclear fusion of a kilogram of hydrogen would produce 2.6Ãâ€â€10^15 J. Not all of that energy can be utilized by any realistic technology, because as much as 50% of energy produced in reactions between nucleons and antinucleons is carried away by neutrinos, so, for all intents and purposes, it can be considered lost..... Moonstalker
The book The Physics of Star Trek by Lawrence M. Krauss take a look at a lot of the Star Trek universe and puts some pretty good ideas forward. Here's the Amazon listing Amazon's Physics of Star Trek Fun reading. greyCell
actually scientists have made much more that teleport a light ray to be presice a light ray cannot be teleported for in essence what is teleported is particles so when talking about teleporting light we consaider light as a particle widely known as a photon the problem is that the phton is a boson and bosons are barely particles at all they only have masses when they are moving as they get thoer masses form the momentum given to them by thier movement according to relativity and since clearly teleportation requires the particle to be at rest with respect to the transporter it would be very hard to do that however i do know what youre talking about youre talking about what is known as the cesuim chamber experiment in which a light wave emerges from a 30 cm of cesium tube before it fully enteres the tube scientists are still trying to explain that experiment although they are sure of one thing it does not contradict with relativity for reasons that have to do with quantum mechanics i had read an explenaion that i personally beleived a while back but i dont remeber the details i will post the details when i find them
wallimo
hmm I was thinking about this very thing this morning, if you think about traditional navy you would never see the captain sitting on the bridge all day. and there'd be a much larger chain of command, anyone can go to the captain in star trek and the captains really hands on, where's the captains personal aid etc :P
TFMF
hmm I was thinking about this very thing this morning' date=' if you think about traditional navy you would never see the captain sitting on the bridge all day. and there'd be a much larger chain of command, anyone can go to the captain in star trek and the captains really hands on, where's the captains personal aid etc :P [/quote'] Well between now and then there was the whole war we heard of in First Contact and other things that would have changed the way ships are run. A larger command chain wouldn't be needed really as it only has a crew complement of 80 odd so would be a bit of a waste.
