TV Man
No, this isn't an old BorisP topic. Scientists in Pittsburgh have apparently been successful in reviving clinically dead dogs for approx. three hours. It's kind of creepy, but maybe will be useful someday: US scientists have succeeded in reviving the dogs after three hours of clinical death, paving the way for trials on humans within years. Pittsburgh's Safar Centre for Resuscitation Research has developed a technique in which subject's veins are drained of blood and filled with an ice-cold salt solution. The animals are considered scientifically dead, as they stop breathing and have no heartbeat or brain activity. But three hours later, their blood is replaced and the zombie dogs are brought back to life with an electric shock. Plans to test the technique on humans should be realised within a year, according to the Safar Centre. However rather than sending people to sleep for years, then bringing them back to life to benefit from medical advances, the boffins would be happy to keep people in this state for just a few hours, But even this should be enough to save lives such as battlefield casualties and victims of stabbings or gunshot wounds, who have suffered huge blood loss. http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,15739502-13762,00.html
GorunNova
If it's true, the 'zombie' part is pure nonsense. There's no brain damage, and they had to do a special process to 'kill' them, right? Therefore, it's mere resuscitation of suspended life, not 'reanimating the dead' -_-'

But once Joe Sixpack hears about it, it will be interpreted differently. The press is using the term "zombie", so when the evening news gets a hold of this story and gives it the 15 second soundbite, all Joe Sixpack will hear is "scientists create zombie dogs." TetsuoShima
Nice technique! If it works on humans, that would be great! Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it), the human brain is quite a bit more complex and as a result also more prone to damage. GorunNova
Actually, if a dog can actually make it through with no damage, it's very likely the same will hold for humans... but they'd better start with primates before they try it on humans O.o... elderbear
Wasn't there a thread about whether or not people have souls? This adds an interesting new twist - I wonder what (if any) memories a person would have after this experience? On a more serious vein, even if it meant brain damage, I'd prefer this to death. Stop with animal testing!! I'M A DOG-LOVING YUPPIE!!!! (erm.. yeah.. and u just shouldn't make any other animal suffer either. Mosquitoes and leeches excluded) =Han=
GorunNova
*sigh* So you WOULD prefer them to try this out on humans, then. It's one or the other, you know...
Beawulf
at least humans can choose. that being said I am not completely against animal testing, just against inhumane conditions and torture.
GorunNova
... since any critter involved in this experiment is probably unconscious at the time, there's no danger of that ^^'
