Secondhand Smoke Study Raises Ire

The last 3 paragraphs in particular...

"In fact, researchers reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1998 that 75% of studies done between 1980 and 1995 that found no link between secondhand smoke and health problems were funded by tobacco companies. In that review, researchers examined 106 studies conducted in those 15 years; two in three indicated secondhand smoke does contribute to lung and heart disease.

"While this study is flawed, there are at least 50 very reputable studies that find a link between secondhand smoke and lung cancer and at least 50 others that find an increased risk of heart disease," says Thun.

Among them: Two findings from the newer Cancer Prevention Study II that began in the 1980s -- the follow-up to the study used for Enstrom's research -- that suggest nonsmokers face a 20% increased risk for both heart disease and lung cancer when exposed to secondhand smoke. "The consensus of multiple health committees from around the world, including the surgeon general, is that secondhand smoke is definitely related to lung cancer and heart disease, and may be also be related to chronic lung disease." "

... it's not just the EPA studying the effects of second hand smoke.

Links to studies of this sort... quite a few of them.

As a smoker i don't really care if they have seperate smoking sections in a bar/resturant (if the buisness chooses to have one) but to ban all stores/resturants from having a smoking sections seems wrong...

It's supposed to discourage smoking, if people can't smoke for most of the day in public places then they're going to eventually wonder if it's worth the bother.

No way! Smokers will always find a way to grab a quick smoke ;)

Even when the only place you can smoke legally is inside your own home?

You betcha bygolly!

P.S. I don't smoke, my sister-in-laws do. My wife works in anti-smoking/tobacco campaigns in the state education system. That doesn't mean I have the right to call anyone names.

I'm kinda sensitive with regard to this subject. I agree about second hand smoke and don't force my bad habit on others by making them breathe my exhalations. I never smoked around my daughter. If I'm driving someone who does not smoke I hold off until they are out of my van. If they are visiting me at home I will go out on the porch to smoke. I'm sorry I lost my temper. I suppose I got so steamed because I'm pissed at myself for failing to quit soooooooooo many times. I will keep trying.

I wouldn't. I am addicted but not crazy :p

But...have you ever heard of a *Concert Pipe? It allows you to smoke and somehow "catches" the "exhaust" so no one knows.

*made for smoking a wonderful, god-given herb (IMHO) ;)

Ah, now that's where scuba-smoking gear comes in. You encase your entire mouth in a mask, with the lighted cigarette inside and proceed. to... ok, enough of this crazy talk :p

(Actually, I could emagine it coming to that.)

I smoke fingernail clippings, and sweaty dried out gym socks.

Also, when I was younger, I listened to way to much Frank

Zappa music....

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...Frank Zappa. The very first LDS (snide reference to ST IV) trip I went on included listening to Frank Zappa's "Lumpy Gravy" and "Billy The Mountain" on 8-track no less! Man, does that bring back memories...er, hold on...flashback...pretty colors...neon flashing lights...oh sh!t, the MAN is at the door...

I saw Frank Zappa, and the Mothers of Invention, in concert, in 1974 (or was it 1975?) soon after Apostrophe came out, at the Syria Mosque, in Pittsburgh, PA. I arrived with a buddy...we had no tickets to the sold out show, then, they opened up the orchestral pit, and I had the front row, best seat in the house.

What a pervert that guy was... haha

You're just like a penguin in bondage....... boinnnng

Edit:

Oh yea, I think I probably was smoking something there that day as well.....

Coolcat13 - qouting myself from page 4

people should know these things and if a person makes the conscious decision to smoke now days then they get what thet deserve ! IMHO

I deeply regret having made this statement and was unaware of the consequences to which it led . To all that I have offened I am deeply sorry and have the utmost regret .

My misguided purpose for saying this was having watched several of my closest family members die in anguish . This is no excuse .

I should have reviewed my statement more carefully as the message that I meant to convey was that people should be aware of the dire consequences and chances that they are taking ,

No man woman or child should ever have to suffer and I would never derive pleasure or satisfaction from that event .

again please accept my deepest and sincerest apologies ....
