DR WHO DAVID: I FACED A BACKLASH

By Cameron Robertson

NEW Doctor Who David Tennant was shocked by the hostile reaction from some fans after it was revealed he was taking over the role.

He logged on to a website to see what people thought of him replacing Christopher Eccleston in BBC1's hit series.

Tennant, 34, said: "The first comment was nice and the next was flattering. Then it was something like, 'I can't bear the sight of him'.

"One after that said, 'Who?' Then it was, 'I'd rather have David Morrissey'. But then it was, 'That's it! The dream is finished! Somebody who looks like a weasel could never play the Doctor! It's over'!"

The Casanova star laughed off the criticism but admitted it will be tough to follow Eccleston, 41, who quit after playing the Doctor for one series.

Tennant said: "I know everybody loved Chris and so did I, but hopefully I won't disappoint people."

Filming has not started yet, but he has met up with Billie Piper, who plays companion Rose Tyler.

He said: "She's great, fantastic, absolutely perfect. Spunky, quick and sexy, just the ideal companion. I'm pleased she's doing the whole series."

Tennant said he wants to fight the daleks but they may not appear in this series, which kicks off with a Christmas special.

He told Doctor Who magazine: "It may not happen this year, but as next year (the third series) has already been commissioned, fingers crossed, I won't get the sack and everyone won't hate me."

BLOODY HELL....the wolves are already out to get david even before he has started shooting the next Dr Who. I wish people would just give him a chance that he deserves

well he has the Christmas special to win us over a little bit then the whole second season . I think with RTDs direction that David will do fine . After all I thought that Christopher was going to be a bit hard to take after the Rose episode , now I think of him as one of the elite best Drs

Those of us 'old' folks remember that this sort of thing happens with every regeneration.

First, there's the new that the current doctor is going to leave and fans of the show have mixed feelings: a person will often be sad to see his doctor go but have some happy anticipation as to who the next guy is going to be.

Then they announce who the actor is and the fans tend to thin he's crap.

Then his first season episodes and many will still think he's crap cause he's not like the last one.

a few seasons onward and he's gaining popularity and when they account he's about to leave, people tend to say, "you know, he wasn't that bad" which eventually turns into "oh, he was one of the best" and then "He was great, but I'm not sure about this new guy, i wonder who they will pick"

and so it comes full circle. :)

The website Tennant logged onto was Outpost Gallifrey... hotbed of some of the worst fan bickering of either side of the Atlantic. The news broke back in April mere weeks after "Rose" debuted, the ratings soared, people came to love Eccleston, and the OG fans lived in fear that something would cause the series to tank enforcing another generational gap between new episodes.

I was one of the posters saying "David who?" but a large majority in the UK were doing headstands over his casting. Primarily due to his performance in "Casanova".

Week after the series ended I got to see "Casanova" and saw why fans raved. He'll do great. But he's better off stayng far, far away from OG. It's not for the faint of heart or those poor folks involved with production. The slightest gaffe is noted and ridiculed to a level approaching absurdity.

To me the OG has always been a great source of information while a the same time being a hotbed of animosity. Many, MANY, of the posters there should have their keyboard priveleges revoked for some of the negative attitude that is displayed.

I like OG for the news but I am a 110% with tinpusher there regarding the fans...some of them need their hands removed at the shoulder.

Only check out OG for the news...totally avoid pretty much anything else, although I did read a couple reviews from last season...One guy would say it was great for x,y and z then the next would say it sucked for the same x, y and z...lunacy!

Yep Potato. I tend to ignore their reviews too because to be honest they certainly aren't an unbiased opinion. I often think that some of those folks just post to be a smart-arse about it, getting their voice heard running someone down must give them a misguided sense of power.

I have to say it makes me sad when people "condemn" doctor who actors like that. I remember how much Mccoy was condemned by fans, it used to really frusutrate me, and fans would even tell me that I wasnt a true fan for liking him. I guess they'll allways be a negative attitude though. I wish Tennant the best of luck personally, I think he'll be fab like the past 9 were :)

What I tend to say to certain fans in those situations is this:

Eccleston is gone, there's no amount of wishful thinking that'll bring him back. David Tennant has been picked for the role, no one's forcing you to watch.

Now I will admit that I have bashed on Colin Baker before, which really I shouldn't do since it wasn't actually Colin's fault when you combine the old series with foul script writing and lack-lustre stories - even a great actor would struggle with that kind of rubbish.

I always had a soft spot for McCoy though, esp in Curse of Fenric.

While I respect your opinion Fenriswolf, I do disagree colin bakers era had bad script writing, I think he did have some pretty damn good stories in my opinion, I really enjoy : Vengeance on varos, revelation of the daleks, attack of the cybermen, mark of the rani (minus the tree ;) ) and hte first and last segements of trial ! but of course Each to there own! :)
