elderbear
Michael J. Straczinsky - Babylon 5. Joss Whedon comes a close second with Firefly. But you have to hand it to Straczinsky for having a five season plan in place and implementing it, slowly developing characters and dropping hints a season or two before the foreshadowed event occurs!!! B5 (gulp!) shows far better character development than any SF series I've ever seen, sneaks interesting moral dilemmas in, and basically outshines all of Star Trek for coherence. Of course, there's been so much Trek, that it probably deserves to win on volume alone - and it's mostly high quality - and that brings us back to Rodenberry. Vektram
Oh, I definately say Berman & Braga with Enterprise. Seriously though, I'd say Ronald Emmerich for directing and co-writing a terrible movie that gave birth to the wondor that is Stargate SG-1. sinergy
Rodenbery definately. The guys who did space above and beyond were awesome too, pity it died. Anyone remeber SeaQuest DSV?
PaulPhoenix
I think Whedon is awesome as a creative writer but JMS is better if we focus on Sci-Fi. You should also try the show Jeremiah, it's only two seasons but it's a great postapocalyptic near future sci-fi. Don't miss it if you like the Fallout games, there are quite a lot of similarities. I also like Robert Hewitt Wolfe. He was great before Andromeda got out of control.
Foil
Rockne S. O'Bannon (Creator) and Andrew Prowse (director) for Farscape. Although Michael J. Straczinsky a close contendor but I think Bab5 lost a little glam in my eyes due to some of the borderline acting (but then again, the wierd acting style also made it stick out). I think Joss Whedon is essentially the Aron Spelling of sci-fi (I always enjoy his stuff but always feel like I do an hour after eating chinese food... an empty feeling in my stomach and a need for something more substantial to chew on). As for Stargate the movie, I would have to pipe in an say that it was every bit as good as the series and a good stepping off point for the SG-1 characters (although different). While it's hardly the best wrote sci-fi in the world, you do have to give credit to such an awesome method of travelling planet to planet cheaply and easily. Almost on par with the transporter from ST. Making a TV show out of it was easy.
martog
Michael J. Straczinsky Beyond that, I can't say it any better than Elderbear. Though i've not watched firefly (so I can't speak of their writers), I do think Rodenberry comes in second. TNG is the nail in the coffin.
str82u
Oh, I definately say Berman & Braga with Enterprise. I Concur, but I'm not nominating them for Nobel Prizes, not anymore that is.

werecow
i dont know if it counts but i nominate Niteshdw for "creating" all the fine sci-fi he provides us with!!!!! :):):)
mikatelo
O'Bannon (Farscape), JMS (Straczynski, Babylon5 and Crusade) and Manny Cotto (Odyssey 5, latest ST Enterprise episodes) are on par - at least for me. Chris Carter (The X-Files, Millenium) is next in the line. After that, credit has to go to Roddenberry for wonderful, long-lasting world (although a bit flat) of Star Trek, EFC and Andromeda. Spielberg? Strange how Lucas doesn't come anywhere near the top... OT (Films mainly): As for the directors/writers, John Carpernter comes to mind (The Thing, The Fog, Dark Star...), and so do Stanley Kubrick (Odyssey 2001) and Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, The Andromeda Strain). mcant
Strange how Lucas doesn't come anywhere near the top... Omg good point, I'll confess he never even occured to me, strange how an iconic set of films means absolutely nothing to me when we are discussing quality I thin it maybe because lie EE Smith , Stars wars was basically a western in space? lol the ey between j and l in the alphabet just resigned
