Potato
Looks like I get to start this one too! After the Daleks' Masterplan comes: The Massacre: The TARDIS arrives in Paris just before the St. Bertholomew's Day Massacre in 1572. The Doctor goes off to meet Charles Preslin while Steven rescues a servent girl named Anne Chaplet, who has overheard the planning of the massacre. The Catholic Abbott of Amboise, who looks like the Doctor, is overheard by Syeven to be plotting the death of the Protestant Admiral de Coligny. The attempt to kill the Admiral fails and the Abbott is blamed. The Doctor and Steven leave only to arrive in Wimbeldon 1966 where they accidentally pick up a new passenger, Dodo Chaplet, who may or may not be a descendent of Anne's. The Ark: The Earth is about to plunge into the sun and all life is on a gigantic ark which will make a 700 year journey to a new planet. The TARDIS arrives on the Ark. Dodo has a cold to which Steven, the future humans and the slave race called the Monoids have no immunity. The Doctor finds a cure and the TARDIS leaves only to immediately arrive on th Ark at the other end of its journey.Another bout of the cold has allowed the Monoids to enslave the humans. With the help of the invisible inhabitants of the new planet the Doctor forces the Monoids and humans to make peace and live together on the new planet. Which brings us to, The Celestial Toymaker: The TARDIS materializes in the domain of the Toymaker, who makes it intangible. The crew is forced to play his games to win it back. Howevere, if they lose they will become the Toymakers subjects. Steven and Dodo succeed in winning 5 games and regain the TARDIS but they cannot leave until the Doctor wins his game, the Trilogic Game, which will destroy the Toymaker's realm as well as the Doctor. The Doctor makes the final move from the safety of the TARDIS by imitating the Toymaker's voice and the travellers escape. The Doctor pops a peice of candy in his mouth to celebrate and screams in pain... Let the discussion begin!
Cypha01
The Celestial Toymaker is brilliant, awesome ideas, still as unique as it was when it came out. I only unfortuantly have the last episode on the lost in time collection, but I foudn it impressive.
coolcat13
this ep was intriguing in that we meet a force that is further advanced than the Dr .It really is interesting how bored the ToyMaker was with all his powers . I found the premise interesting and watched most of it as reconstructs I am not sure that it was a great ep at the time but certainly a new twist . Potato
What I think was great about it was the fact that this bored, immortal creature could have wiped the floor with the Doctor much like Armus does to Tasha in the TNG episode "Skin of Evil", but for some reasone is obliged to couch everything as a game. I haven't seen the recons, I did see the last ep and read the novelization but I can't remember if it is explained why he operates in this manner. He reminds me of Trelane in the Star Trek episode "The Squire of Gothos", only less childish.
Fenriswolf
It's another good example of an effective non-standard villain I think, like Potato says, he has all this power but he has to play a game in the end to justify it - so in some small way he has a code of honour. I can also see the resemblance to Trelane as well, only there's something far more sinister about the Toymaker. Another powerful being is Fenric and he has a penchant for playing games as well if you remember?
Potato
I love the Curse of Fenric, it is such a lovely story. Fenric is more malevolent than the Toymaker though. Fenric is about destruction and the Toymaker just makes you his slave if he wins. If you want more Toymaker read the Nightmare Fair (published by Target) or Divided Loyalties (published by the BBC) in which he takles the 6th and 5th Doctors. Plus Divided has a flashback that shows the 1st Doctor's initial meeting with the Toymaker. You will probably notice that they do in fact recognize each other in Celestial Toymaker implying the previous encounter.
Fenriswolf
I like the sounds of that. I love it when they can tie things in from books to the Tv series and vice-a-versa. It's one of the biggest things I adore, continuity across a varying media.
theaveng
The Celestial Toymaker is brilliant' date=' awesome ideas, still as unique as it was when it came out.[/quote'] It is??? I thought it was boring. It reminded me of that crap DS9 episode "Move Along Home". I liked the "Ark" though. Out of the ~20 episodes of Doctor Who I think worth buying, the Ark is near the top of the list. Good solid science fiction. troy
Potato
A lot of things that are brilliant ideas are considered boring these days. Especially if they don't have a ton of action or sex in them. It seems that nowadays society is looking for more bang for their buck and are overlooking character and story. If you want proof, just look at what's playing in the multiplex.

But I like very little Star Trek.
