Now we are in season 2 of Battlestar Galactica I was wondering how many now say that the old series was better seeing as there was a wee bit of objection to re-making the series when it first aired with the mini series and the first season.

I for one say the new one is miles ahead, darker, more intense, faster pace and deffo better written and we aint yet seen any other aliens or creatures.

I saw the original back in '78 and loved it, there was nothing else like it on TV :)

I've seen all of the new and love it as well, it is by far the best thing I've seen since DS9 finished :D

I don't even try and compare them. They are completely different to each other being made all these years apart. TNS obviously has better effects and is more 'realistic', but I don't think it means that the series is 'better' than TOS. I remember quite a few eps. from TOS that were awesome for that time but would look silly now.

Overall I think they are both outstanding series. Back in the late '70's TOS was one of the best shows on TV, likewise now for TNS.

I will just sit back and enjoy them both B)

I also watched the original show when it first aired, and back then, I was one of the only people I knew that actually watched it and liked it back then.

Overall tho, I'd have to admit I like the new one better, if they must be thus rated. The main thing I do not like about the new series, is the female Starbuck, and the way Starbuck is portrayed and acted.

i tried watching the orginal series on dvd a couple of months ago and i couldnt watch them all as looking back now some of them where awful but afew where good. Galactica 1980 always struck me as being bad...apart from "the return of starbuck"

yeah i kinda forgot about the "love em both" option doh

I remember watching the Original BSG when it first came out. My appreciation being much like my appreciation Space: 1999 when it was new a year or so previously.

I thought both had potential, but were seriously flawed gems that needed some extensive re-working. I watched both in their time religiously (what else was there to watch? VCRs were for the "rich" by my reckoning back then.), but never entertained the idea that they were well written or thought out. I just kept hoping they'd get better.

Space:1999's second season though was even worse than the first through the tweaking given it by Fred Freidberger in an effort to "americanize" it. The Original BSG, being unable to draw enough viewers away from 60 Minutes got the ax for budgetary reasons and came back as the gaggingly bad Galactica: 1980.

So yes, although I do have a fond spot in my heart for the original BSG, it was never a "favorite" series as such. More an interesting idea that suffered from poor execution.

Bravo for the New BSG!

how many now say that the old series was better

Season 1 was a tie. The old show had some dumb stories, but it also had some really strong stories (like the first 5) that are better than the new show's soap opera. So overall, a tie.

But now season 2 of the New Galactica is moving past the original, with better stories, and more depth.

I only watched the new pilot . I was dissapointed with it and havent watched the new series as of yet . I was a fan of the old series or at least most of the old series and the new series had little correlation with the old series , if any at all

From what I've seen of it the new series is more of a soap opera than a space opera. trying to compare the two series is kinda like comparing Star Wars to the old Sci-Fi seriels it was supposed to be an homage to, pointless really. That said, I voted for the original series...I just like Dirk Benedict as Starbuck. Also, what happened to the African-American actors? Boomer and Tigh have both been reimagined as not being black males, why? Come to think of it, are any of the main characters black? Are we ignoring one minority in favor of others? Women (who are actually the majority), asians and hispanics are represented (as are caucasians). This could be a new thread..."racism by omission in the new Galactica."

I'm going there, lol. I myself do find it odd that there are no strong African-American (or African-Canadian, or African-British) male characters in the new cast; but I do enjoy the show. It is well written and the effects are brilliant. Boomer and Tigh should have remained black, IMO, or at least they should have included some strong black male characters (there's Dualla, but she's a chick).

I grew up with the original and looked forward to the reruns every day after school back-to-back with Buck Rogers. So I will always be fond of the original, in spite of "now-crappy effects, acting, and stories" that were strangely enough state-of-the-art at the time but not now good enough for the cynical, jaded hearts of some (hindsight is 20-20, and a bitch). So, ultimately I had to vote for the original. There was magic there that is not in the new show.

If i remeber correctly i can only really name 4 episodes which i thought where well worth watching of the orginal. The TV movie, war of the gods part 1 and 2(really liked that one with the count in it and the angel like space craft of light)

I think its unfair on the season 1 of the new series to say it was simular to the orginal, as far as i can tell the orginal season 1 is nothing like the new battlestar season 1 they are hardly alike at all, maybe the mini series was but was fairly different to the orginal.

Also I would like to say that race of the people on board is meaningless and wish people wouldnt actually say that certain characters should of had x or y colour skin, does it really matter? no, also there are ethinic minorities in the new one anyway so really kinda kills that argument about race or creed of the characters.

Cthulhuspawn, I think you will find that baltar (he was in bridget jones dariey) is actually a british actor (James Callis) and he does have a english accent. Number 6 is Tricia Helfer and was born in Donalda, Alberta, Canada.

Apollo - played by Jamie St. John Bamber Griffith was born in London to an American father, Ralph, and a British mother.

Col Tigh - played by Micheal Hogan who is canadian

Chef Tyrol - played by Aaron Douglas is canadian so is the presidents assistant, Petty officer Dualla (dee) and afew more characters.

So really its a Canadian/American and British cast....check out scifi.com

Neomaster, you completely misunderstood my comment, and if you had placed it in context you would have realized that I meant African-American, AFRICAN-Canadian, or AFRICAN-British. I have, however, edited my post to avoid further misunderstandings in the future. And yes, I really think it does have some meaning (corporately, demographically, or otherwise) when one particular ethnic group is "overlooked".

How very astute of you to assume that I was talking about Anglo-Saxons when I was speaking of those males of African descent. I do, btw, know you are caucasian, I have seen your pic.

Never try to make me look stupid. You will fail miserably.

lol sorry i wasnt trying to make you look stupid sorry anyway. What i ment is that I dont pay attension to weather there african decent or as you said anglo-saxon decent as i dont think its that important, as long as there good actors.

People who believed the new series would be like the old series.....

.....are fools.

Anytime a remake is done, it never looks like the previous show, because the effects are more advanced. That should be obvious.

The best way to approach a remake is as a *brand new show* and no preconceptions.
