I can't remember the exact quote, but from ST: First Contact, Picard to Lilly

P: "Money doesn't exist in the 24th century"

L: "No money, you mean you don't get PAID?"

P: "We are no longer obsessed with the aqusition of things. We seek to better ourselves and the rest of mankind" <------- If somoene can give me the exact quote I'd appreciate it.

Chris

It's lovely idea but whilst there are humans on this planet I don't think it's going to happen. As species we always want more than the next person and society encourages us to go out and buy new things

It might be blasphemy, but listen to Shania Twains 'Ka'ching!' and tell me it isn't so...

I walked into media play yesterday and it is like 130$ for a fliping season of DS9...And people wonder why we download...? I think that we are not doing anything wrong moraly, but in the eyes of the law we might be. America is the greedest most powerhungery country ever to grace the earth and our big companys that produce this stuff are makeing us (americans) look power hungry too. So i say that if there is a way to go around them then we should not mabe do it but we NEED TO DO IT!! VIVA LA REVOLUTION!!! lol

I know what you mean. I pay $49.95 per month (U.S.) for high-speed access

Just kinda wondering what type of connection that gets you. I pay 45.00/month canadian for a 6mb dsl connection, and that price includes my long distance.

All I get for my $49.95 is net access...no phone. The speed is supposed to be 12.0Mbps.

EDIT: Another reason I download...I'm too old to shoplift :p

Its almost compulsive for me to download stuff. I can't stand to have my internet connection idle for more then an hr. I figure, i pay 40 bucks a month for my highspeed, i ought to get every ounce of data down that i can, to make it a real bargin :)

The end result of this. I've got a bunch of movies i will never watch. I just download for the sake of downloading.

My name is MindTrick, and I am addicted.

True dat. Except I pay $60. But my max speed is suppose to be 54 Mbps. The key word is "suppose". I swear most of the time I get dial-up.

I hate DVD's, by the time I've inserted the disc, sat through the multi-language copyright warnings and navigated the nonsense menus I've lost interest. I even rip and compress stuff I actually own to avoid this.

The big labels keep wanting to screw people out of their $$' date=' [/quote']

I disagree. Yes Paramount is charging too much. But there are plenty of other shows out there who only charge $30-50 per season and that's a reasonable price.

Also I have a hard time buying your argument? You can afford a ~$1000 computer and a $400 internet bill (high-speed). You could cancel the internet, and buy the entire set of Babylon 5 or SG1.

So it's not that you lack the money... jst that you're wasting it on internet bills.

$400 internet bill?! Are you talking yearly or about one hell of an overcharging ISP?

Also... you can't surf, read e-mail, do vocie over internet, or all sorts of other things with a boxed set of Babylon 5... so I wouldn't call internet a waste of money.

Yes of course $400 yearly. That was self-evident. And, you don't need hi-speed just to read email... a $10 a month phone connection can do it... which frees up ~$300 to buy dvds legally.

POINT:

A lot of you act like downloading is free, but it ain't. Instead of giving your money to the DVD sellers, you're giving it to the Internet Company. *Same difference.* Same amount of money spent.

Interesting argument... "I don't like it, so it's a waste of money."... and you DID overlook voice over IP (a great way to save on long-distance), and online TV / radio stations with content you can't buy in stores... and how about downloading media that you can only buy overseas at insane prices? I may spend a lot on my net connection, but I get back what I pay most months if only in long-distance charges ^^

I don't know about others, but I buy what I can, and download what I can't... or if the prices are too high, I buy some and download the rest to lower the effective price.

Strawmen are nice... I always liked the one with the tin man and the lion ^_^

Still, you DO have the point that broadband is a waste if you only genuinely need to read e-mails and if DVDs are less expensive than a broadband connection... which in my experience isn't the case.

"strawman argument" refers to the debating tactic of setting up an imaginary man, putting words into its mouth, and then shooting it down. It's considered a poor tactic, because you're ignoring the person you're supposed to be debating.

.

And no high-speed's not a "waste". A tie. You end up spending the same amount of money on high-speed internet, as you would spend buying legal DVDs.

(Actually, now that I think about it, I've bought TNG for $70 and sold it for $90, so I actually *made* money via buying legal dvds...... but that wasn't in my original argument.)

.

I know nothing about VOIP. I know I spend $20 a month on a phone line + long distance. Is VOIP cheaper? What's the cost?

However, not everyone only uses the internet for email, Dling, and surfing the net.

I myself use the the high speed for online gaming (SW Galaxies), collecting abandonware programs amongst other things. As well as the above. So the value of High speed goes up, where as the value of owning DVDs goes down.

It's case of each to their own.

Thought i'd throw my 2cents on this whole "high speed is a waste of money" thing.

Personally, I don't think I could survive on dailup. Ever try doing windows updates over a dailup connection? pure murder. Webpages can be extremely slow, and if you get a email thats larger then a meg in your pop account, your gonna get pop locked.

at 45 bucks a month (including taxes) i get a 6mb dsl connection (cable around here is more expensive, and not very reliable due to the shared nature of it) 5cents a minute long distance anywhere in north america, and any form of entertainment my greedy hands can get ahold of. Personally, I think its a bargin.

It ain't a tie where I am... 50-70 bucks for a season set? What country do you live in? The US? Up here, and with the shows I look for, I save money big time, as they would cost me $100 bucks or more to order over the border or from overseas, if at all. Frankly, I'm not a huge Star Trek fan... mostly I've been grabbing old Dr. Who eps and such, all of which aren't exactly readily available.

So, in my case, I actually save quite a bit of money, and get things that I'd never be able to get without paying through my nose. Still, for most Trek fans that live in the States, you're probably right about it being cheaper to just buy the DVDs.

The big question is, how many of the people here are from the States, how many of them can get season sets as cheaply as, say, $50-$70 each, and pay so much for internet access to lose money by downloading? Oh,and only use their connection to download movies and check e-mail and thus not split effective internet costs through other purposes than movie / show downloading.
