Pella
You've got a point... buttery kitties get a serious hit on the cuteness scale' date=' not to mention the health problems when they lick off all that butter ;p[/quote'] Please no jokes about cooking buttery kittens :o
Tiberius
Okay, this one is easy to test. Stick a sound recording device in the forrest... You get the idea...
Slash
THE TREE DOES NOT MAKE A SOUND Basic Philosophy lessons teaches you that...gawd...it makes the air molecules move in the exact same way, but does not make the sound there, sound is a sense created in our brains, nothing more The same with colours don't exist full stop...It's just wavelengths of light EDIT: OMG at the guy who said record there! It doesn't mean that just because there isn't anyone there it wont make a sound...it still would make the sound if there was someone there, but as there isn't, 'sound' isn't heard, just everything else is the same. If it were to be recorded, then yes it obviously would seem to make a sound, as then you would hear it seperatly.....some people just cannot grasp the idea that it DOES NOT MAKE A SOUND!!! It's so difficult to explain typing..
Slash
i think that it is the forest that falls to the tree a tree falls in forest and a deaf man witnesses it, does it make a sound If the deaf man was the ONLY living thing around to witness it, then no it wouldn't make a sound. maverick
Nope... it doesn't matter which way you strap on the toast' date=' because cat trumps toast... possibly due to mass, but mostly due to cuteness value ^_^[/quote'] tie the cat to an anvil. problem solved:D

howiepoohs
Ok, we know the tree makes no actual sound, but sound waves, which resonate through the atmosphere and are decoded into sound somewhere between ours ears and brains. The answer I want to know is, as sound waves do not travel through a vacuum, what happens to them? How come shockwaves travel through a vacuum? If an atom bomb went off a few feet away from you in a vacuum you would feel it but not hear it. Which ofcourse makes all sci fi wrong because when they shoot or blow things up in space, it would be silent, yet they allways have a nice explosion sound. S0V13T
THE TREE DOES NOT MAKE A SOUND Basic Philosophy lessons teaches you that... Er.... am I the only one that dosen't recognize Philosophy as a science? I think that saying that a falling tree is slient if no one is around to hear it, is on par with saying that as soon as you leave the movie theatre, all the people that were in there too ceace to exist, on the basis of that you don't see them any more. It The tree WOULD be silent, however, if it fell in outer space.
coolcat13
Ok I will take the philosophical side of this debate . even use a bit of pure science as well the tree would not make a sound if no one were there to hear it because sound is percieved .now when I say no one I mean no one living thing that has the ability to hear . this is the reason that the arguement can be made . If I blow a dog whistle but there is no dog around to hear it then has that dog whistle made a sound ? most of you would answer no because it appears to be silent . there are many things that are constantly resonating noise to those that can hear it. when yopu are in a room that is dead silent and you hear nothing there are noises constantly around us . our heartbeat and breathing the sound of air no matter how stale vibrations of the ground settling even if so silent we cant hear it . what is sound therefore ? it is what we can hear . one who is stealthy is said to be moving silently and making no noise yet they are4 indeed making noise.thier mere movement makes noise by moving the air around them . Pella
This getting silly now, time for a serious philosophy question to get us back on track. "If once you pop, you just can't stop why do pringles have resealable lids?" :p
S0V13T
What I *REALLY* want to know is : If a tree falls down in the forest , does Bob Morane come along and put it back up again ????? Bob Morane not only knocked the tree down with his bare hands, in one mighty blow(the tree is a thousand year old Redwood, not a piddely little pine or birch), but the tree DIDN'T make a sound either, out of fear and respect for Bob Morane. Furthermore, Bob Morane would then prodeec to play a perfect 9 innings of baseball with that tree, using the moon as the ball. THEN he would ram the tree back into place.
