Would've been a better reason if they did something like in Dr. Who:

"They all speak English!" - Rose

"Something something you're just hearing English something something TARDIS does it domething something." - Doctor

But as most people have said they just did it to save time and money.

Actually, English IS spoken throughout the universe. Maverick and I have been on a 67 year mission to bring English (and also pig-latin) to every nook and cranny. We are now on year 1.5

Can you hurry up and bring it to the Whitehouse?!?

It wouldn't work, it's full of politicians, they all talk crap fluently, but thats their linguistic limit

There's no sensible explanation for this that doesn't seem forced. The truth is that, like someone said, it makes things easier and cheaper in the real world to ignore details like this. In Star Trek they had the forethought to make up an excuse for this, ie the universal translator. It's the same in Farscape and their translator microbes.

Stargate on the other hand just ignores it. It doesn't bother me much, honestly. It would be nice to have some more attention to details, but what the hell, it's still an entertaining show.

Seems to me, the writers should have included something about how the Ancient's technology would apply a local language to any gate traveler's mind if the equipment was working perfectly. Although, the Ancient's were so smart they might not have needed translators. Or, the only places Ancient's would go spoke the same language and it only became a problem after they were gone and the newer races started using the gates.

Whatever, it's still a great series based on a fantastic movie.

Other than the prison world SG-1 gets sent too, isn't it a little funny that out of all these worlds that the Stargate gets used on people never attempt to touch the "wave of water" the wormhole spits out when it's first connected?

Certainly some villiage idiot has tried...only to lose a hand or fingers.

Course he then screamed in english and such cause no one really speaks Egyptian or other dead languages offworld anymore ;p
