Do you support John Roberts?

I must say that I support the nomination of Judge John G. Roberts to be the next Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. As a Republican and a conservative myself, he seems to hold many of the same beliefs that I do.

I must also commend him for not answering the questions from the senators on topics that might come before him if he does get confirmed as Chief Justice. I know this came as a disappointment to many of the senators (especially the Democrats), but like mentioned in the hearing, a judge should be like an umpire in baseball. An umpire calls balls and strikes. He does not pitch or bat. In the same way you don't want a biased umpire, you don't want a biased judge.

I get good vibes from John Roberts, so he seems okay to me so far.

The problem I have about all this, is that Dubya (George W. Bush), is now in a position to control a great deal of the clout (via the Supreme Court and two new nominations) that the Republicans might be able to have influence in, for the next 20 to 30 years or so.

That leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Dubya's next nominee, had better be Bob Morane, or all hope for America will be lost....

The Republican above is implying that by not answering questions which might provide some insight into how you might decide a case, you are demonstrating your ability to judge a case without bias. This simply doesn't make any sense.

Whether or not you tell people your opinion on a matter is not an indication of whether or not you will show bias when you actually decide a case. They are separate questions. A good judge should be able to decide a case according to the law even if it conflicts with his personal opinion.

The only thing that not offering your opinion before you are named Chief Justice of the Supreme Court can tell people about you is that you are not willing to share your opinion. That way people can not tell what your bias, if any might be. Nobody should suggest that an Umpire was biased if he told you he thought baseball might be a better game if a batter could get 4 strikes before he was out, so long as that same Umpire has always called a batter out after 3 strikes. We might however suspect some bias if he reveals that his grandson plays on one of the teams. He does not demonstrate his ability to judge without bias simply by refusing to answer the question "Do you have a grandson playing on any of the baseball teams?".

That's OK - your condition can be cured ... or at least we can put you in cryogenic stasis until it can be cured without any side effects!!!

Why are liberals always so mean-spirited?

The problem is that the Supreme court HAS shown its personal bias as long as I can remember. Most decisions get predicted by the media long before a decision is reached, with few exceptions. If giving his personal views in a confirmation hearing is so critical to his appointment, tnen why isn't a judges political affiliation listed on the voter information pamphlet?

People would vote straight party line like a large number of people do for other candidates now.
