Trekkies, Trekkers and who else?

I disagree. According to your definition I'd be a Trekker but I never even heard of that word until I came on this forum. If I call myself a Trekkie everyone knows what I mean, if I call myself a Trekker people will think I like hiking.

Besides, trekker is also a Dutch word for tractor... not to mention a few other associations that could be made...

Hmmm.... haven't we had this discussion before? It sure feels a little deja vu.

To quote the wiki and possibly end the discussion about what is what...:

The term Trekkie is sometimes considered derogatory, perhaps because of a perceived parallel to the term groupie. Some Star Trek enthusiasts prefer the term Trekker, while some others hold the latter term to be stupid or pretentious, and, for that reason, self-identify as Trekkies. Some Trekkies even say that a Trekker is a Trekkie who is embarrassed for being Trekkie.

On the other hand, Trekker is sometimes used as a term for the kind of Star Trek fan who is obsessed with the fine details.

Personally, I heard them both being used the exact same way by different people, so with the evolution of vocal speech I'd say they now just mean the exact same thing (in English) and which you prefer depends solely on your own preference since for most people there really is little to NO difference in meaning anymore these days...

As I said, I prefer Trekkie, simply because that's the term Gene Roddenberry used and where I'm from virtually nobody uses trekker this way.

I consider myself as an individual who enjoys star trek (except Enterprise) and dislike labels or stereotypes. I enjoy using my computer and I work in IT, but to be considered a "Geek", which I am not, is offensive. The problem is that many people see fans of star trek as "trekkies, trekkers or geeks or nerds or whatever" and has this become almost a stigma. While I enjoy my work and sci fi, I also enjoy an active social life and a full sex life. Lets just say we are people who enjoy intelligent storylines with the premis that one day we as a race of people will put aside our differences and live in harmony with each other and will need for nothing. We need to look at ourselves and realise that even small preduces can lead to all out war and bloodshed. It is so easy for people to play on these and programme people into certain behaviours we only have to look back over the last 60 years to see this in action, and widespread death and destruction this has caused. Look what happend to Yugoslavia, The Jewish people, black people, white people and so on. Whats this about? Huh? We are ALL people, the same. Simple as that. We have but 1 planet to live on, lets not screw it up. That is ofcourse, unless we are wiped out by global warming/ Ice age.

So in summery, I love start trek and I am me.

I agree that these terms are making everyone stereotypical. In all essence of the Gene Roddenberry Star Trek spirit, we should abandon these terms and just call ourselves star trek fans. Trekkies and Trekkers are just synonyms of that term and have no outside meaning. End of story. All of you stop arguing about which term is coz its spreading the stereotype and creating more barriers! Someone lock this topic and abandon it please. Lets all continue to be friends.

You don't use the terms "trekkie" or "trekker" to people who are not fans, because as you said they don't understand. You just say "I like science fiction" or "I like star trek".

The first time I heard "trekker" was from Leonard Nimoy (spock) in 1990 who said it was a more PC term for casual fans. And "trekkie" is for the more rabid fans.

If Mr. Spock said it, it must be true. ;-)

.

I'm not really sure I qualify as a "trekker" anymore. I hate half of the shows (voyager & enterprise). How can I claim to be a "trekker" when I think half of it is trash?

ok saying "Niners" is offensive is a little far

I mean, its what fans of DS9 generally call themselves. Thats like saying "i find the term trekkie or trekker offensive", we like Trek it's what we are, no matter how it may or may not relate to something else even if obscure or not
