Should I watch Firefly first

There is story arcs in the season not shown in the movie. The movie is enough on its own - look what happened to Star Wars IV.

It was refreshing to not have some dorky actors running around in bad makeup pretenting to be the proverbial "alien" hominoids. Its kinda retro, with some old tech gear and a mix of Mandarin/Cantonese slang - I dont know which type it is.

It is deffently good enough on its own, but i think it would be even better if you've seen the tv series first, only 14 episodes anyways. The charachters are so much more developed for you then, and cause of that the movie so much more suspenceful. And there are aspects of the movie which will make an episode or two not as enjoyable.

And thinking about it further, its VERY important to see the tv series first if you want to be blown away. Seeing the tv series first will make increase the enjoyment of the film by a factor of 10.432, not that not seeing the movie first would make it non-enjoyable, but having seen the movie with severeal friends who watched the tv-series and several who hadn't, the ones who watched the tv-series enjoyed it much more, and were much more impacted by it.

And the tv series is just great anyways :) I think i'm going to watch Josh Whedon's other creations, buffy and angel, cause of it.

I haven't seen the film yet, but im really looking forward to do so. In Sweden it hits the theaters the fourth of november, and because i really wanna see it on the big-screen, i'll just have to be patient and wait. One month left...

I can really recommend watchin' the tv-show before the film as you'll probably get to know the characters a little better.

Wanna say that i loved it from the first minute, and watched the first ten episodes in a row....

Also wanna add that there is a three-issue comic miniseries released, that is supposed to bridge the gap between the tv-show and the film.

It's not necessary to have seen the series to enjoy the movie. My brother-in-law wasn't familiar with the series and still enjoyed it. However, as a "Whedonite", I don't think it has the same impact (especially certain events) on the novice viewer that it does on us fans who have a vested interest in the characters. I also think that without the back-story seen in the series, the characters may seem a little one-dimensional on the big screen. If you go see the movie first, I still recommend watching the series.

I just bought the dvds, should receive it in a week or so. First of my sci fi collection. Next on the list, the ultimate star trek collection :P

In my opinion, watch the 14 episodes first then watch the movie. I gotta wait till January to see the movie in the cinema in Asia. Very annoying. But let's hope the dvd is out by then.

I would say watch the series first. Its a pretty good series in its own right and by far the best thing that Whedon's come up with to date. You should get a little more out of the movie by watching the series as you will be familiar with the characters and their backstories. But hell, the movie would still be great even if it was a stand-alone feature.

Nite, you should see the show first - obviously - while it's said that the movie will hold up on its own, it's impossible to bake in the depth of the characters that has come out of 14 episodes in one single movie so of course you should take a peek at the show first! :) However, be warned, it's highly addictive - I was devastated when the show was over (for now..)

I'd say it helps considerably... while the film works on its own, there is only so much you can do in 113 minutes compared to 14 episodes.

I just watched the show and I feel it probably made me appreciate the film better but it did make me feel that some issues from the series weren't addressed and others were hamfistedly stuck in to resolve issues.

But yes, at the end of the day as soulreaper says - you can't appreciate the characters as much without the series and even though I wouldn't lavish the endless praise that some fans would upon it, it's certainly one of the better sci-fi shows of recent years.

i differ from thr group here. i was disapointed with the film as a "firefly" movie but thought it was a pretty good film on it's own. i say watch the film first just as a film and then watch the series rewatching the film at the end to see what you think of it as it ties into the series.

You see I did that and to be honest it totally left me cold. Yet after I watched the TV series I went out and ranted for half-an-hour about Fox. How could they let such a wonderful program just die, it made me as mad as I was when the BBC canned Dr. Who.

*grumblemutters*

I still say its worth watch the TV series first, then the movie last.

I must agree with all the above, especially on the shows adictiveness. It should have come with a health warning. Very bleak without it.

.... BTW are they going to make more or is that just a rumour?
