If Star Wars I & II hadn't been so badly bungled, it would have been a much more difficult choice. Star Trek has the advantage of multiple series to create a developing universe in, multiple movies and episodes to tell stories. Lots of character development, cleverness, and human nature.

I think that Star Wars IV-VI were much deeper mythologically, but the vast quantity of Star Trek material gets me to side with Trek. SW has vast depths (IV-VI), ST has a much broader exploration of human nature in far more varied situations.

A Jungian Analyst or a Joseph Campbell style mythologist would probably have to run with Star Wars ... but even then, Star Trek develops universal themes and taps the collective unconscious for powerful symbols.

i like both for different reasons. both sci fi, true...but beethoven and eminem are both musicians.

star wars originals were more fun than star trek though trek is undoubedly more engaging, with more time to develop characters (if only lucas would make a post rotj tv series) and establish a timeline and universe.

on the other hand star trek is more believable, not like the x-files with outrageous stories every week).

i liked the star wars point of view, told essentially at first by a bunch of desparate law breakers. (acting in defiance of the establishment). that probably gave it an edge, made me want em to win more.

evil was good in this!! B) B) B)

lots of it over all he movies.

lots of mysticism too.

i could probably go on all day.

still love both equally for different reasons.

however

Star Wars was okay for movies. I waited untill I could see them for nothing. I wouldn't like to see that as a series. Startrek on the other hand was a great series which then expanded into movies and extended into more series.

This is something Starwars could never do.

You can't really compare the two....SW has never had a televised franchise and so people who are saying "there's a lot more to ST" are right, but at no fault of SW's franchise...There's just no SHOWS, there's been full seasons of material from which we can paint our complete picture of the ST universe from TOS, DS9, TNG, voy, Ent, and then there's been 10 films....You're comparing that to 3 SW films made in the 70's and 2 in the late 90's(~2000ish).

From a cinematic perspective it's completely naive to have expected similar films in Eps 1/2 to those made in 1970...For exactly that reason, THEY WERE MADE IN 1970! And on ZERO budget, it's now 30 years later and the director/writer is a BILLIONAIRE of course it's going to be different...For one thing our society (unfortunately) demands something different...The vast majority of deeply mythological or philosophical films are NOT successful and widely popular, sure that's not what WE care about as watchers, we want gripping storyline and background...But wallets open for flashy things and CG :(.

Star Trek provides a much more optimistic view of the future, which is appealing. The idea that mankind can overcome natural tendencies like greed and pride (though obviously not completely). However, the "science" is much more farfetched.

Star Wars basically extrapolates from human nature. Even with great technology, human nature doesn't change. The science is also more believable. For example, no transporters, no food replicators. They have basic FTL hyperdrive, some cool lasers, and that's about it. "The Force" is the big concept in Star Wars that interests me.

I voted for Star Trek because I think that the purpose of life is to better ourselves. Star Trek is based on the idea of spreading peace and exploring the unknown. Great human qualities. Star Wars, however, also shows that it is possible to overcome evil... So really, they aren't too much different now are they?

From a cinematic perspective it's completely naive to have expected similar films in Eps 1/2 to those made in 1970...For exactly that reason' date=' THEY WERE MADE IN 1970! And on ZERO budget[/quote']

IV: $11,000,000

V: $18,000,000

VI: $32,500,000

I would hardly call that nothing. The budgets seem very reasonable for movies from those periods with a writer/director and actors who were virtually unknown at the time the first movie came out. Most of the money probably went to the special effects - some of the best at the time.

The arguments I usually hear in a Star Trek vs Star Wars debate (from Star Wars or non-sci-fi fans):

-Star Wars is fantasy and Star Trek is sci-fi. Like sci-fi is supposed to be a bad thing. I think Star Wars without lightsabers, X-Wing fighters, Star Destroyers, Death Stars, R2D2, RCP0, etc. would be pretty boring. What makes something sci-fi or fantasy? Star Trek and Star Wars are both sci-fi and fantasy.

-I watched a few Star Trek episodes/movies and didn't like it. There's the difficulty of comparing 5 movies with a franchise that exists of 700 episodes and 10 movies. How can you compare the two franchises unless you've seen what they have to offer?

Does anyone else remember ridiculous arguments (either in favor of Star Trek or Star Wars, doesn't matter)?

Seeing as how this is a (primarily) Star Trek fansite, do you really need to ask which we prefer?! :)

As a matter of fact, the ONLY sci-fi I watch is Star Trek (all series)! Been watching it for years... don't know what I'd do if Enterprise got cancelled.

Hey i'm new here great site! wow :D anyway, I really dont understand people that like SW more and actually I dont think u can compare both, ST has a huge universe and 5 series + movies which makes it much more diverse and makes the viewer almost believe this world is true. While SW is just a movie triology nothing more to it (for me atleast) I mean how many times can u watch those movies... while ST offers hours, days even weeks of entertainment. As u probably alrdy realized Im all for ST, but a nice SW movie from time to time.. alright :)

This poll is not relevant.

Statistically, you are asking which members of the group: Star Trek fans are fan of Star Trek. That would be about everyone. Of course there are some who do not fit in... LOL

YAY you. This remark shows or at least suggests you have not paid attention to the MMORPG game: "Star Wars Galaxies". In Expanded Universe (yes, I say EXPANDED) Star Wars by far exceeds Star Trek. Ok, NO interdimensional beings. NO time travel... but Intergalactic Buggs? Ne'er seen in Star Trek.

Could be I'm mistaken tho.

Elladan
