Tenebrae
Yeah, DNA actually has some of the most impression data compression ever... I'd say that we'll probably be able to mess around with DNA in a fairly sophicated way long before we actually understand it to any great extent. I mean, the interactions between various different protein strings alone will likely take decades to understand. Of course, if you've watched Threshold, you'll know that DNA can be hacked by sound, no less! So genetic augmentation is only a CD away. ;)
GorunNova
I haven't seen Threshold, and obviously I have one more reason not to... a few more reasons like that, and I'll watch it just to laugh my head off at it's B minusness ^^'
GhostShadow
In "Dr. Bashir I presume" the admrial that Sisko contacted said that Genetic enginering was band in the federation beacuse of the fact that a "Super Human" would have "Super Greed" and it would destroy the Human race and other races probly had the same problem. I can say that the Romulans would have the MOST problem with greed and power b/c they are parinoide and arrogant. The cardassians have big egos and probly would have suffered the same fate as Humans and Romulans.
MrDad
Back on subject again: Considering the Federation's (including its earlier incarnations) experiences with genetic modification of humanity (the Eugenics Wars for example), it is only logical that such a view would prevail. Tenebrae
GhostShadow... given the fact that Bashir DIDN'T have super greed - I'd say that the Admiral is espousing what has essentially become ensconsced rhetoric within the Federation. They're so certain that things can only go wrong, they aren't even interested in it - despite the evidence that Bashir constitutes. I just find it hard to believe that there is no species in the Alpha quadrant that is obsessed with creating atomic supermen!
Steveo
Being an atomic (or at least radioactive) superman, I can understand the desire :P

Then you can see the problem with "looking god in the eye". And I think the federation has the right to be scared of genetics.
