Are We Alone?

There are billions and billions of starsystems... If only one in a million of them have planents, and only one in a million of those have planets that could support life. Of them, only one in a million really do support life and only one in a million has life and only one in a million have intelligent life...

My, what a vast number of intelligent life forms would there be...

So how could anyone in their right minds say that we are alone??? Just because no-one has contacted us? We really don't have the right technology ourselves, so why should we expect others to have that? For all we know, we're the eldest of intelligent life forms...

If only we could forsee the far future, I'm not talking 24th century, but 29th or so... I bet by then we have the technology to really go out there... Not just our solar system, but beyond...

If we are alone in all this... Or, only in this galaxy,

It's a LOT a waste of space...

Someone said something like this...

It was said in the film 'Contact', where there was contact bu no-one believed it... I think it'll be like that for real, we grasp time as linear, but who's to say that other races can't find ways to bend it?

I brought the entire idea of space travel up to him and his opinion was it would never' date=' ever, be possible due to whole mass approaching the speed of light = infinite mass (or weight) thing fom Einstein's equations. Thus from his point of view we are alone, for all practical purposes, since interstellar travel is effectively impossible.[/quote']

Everything Einstein did was based upon direct observation, or previous data available.

However, I'd point out that all of it is based upon Earth. We watch an apple fall from a tree & can calculate it's mass, rate of fall, impact area, etc.

.....So how far does the apple fall in space? Well, it doesn't fall at all.

Is it possible, therefore, that once we clear the magnetic influences of our solar system, that we can achieve much faster speeds?

I think that we are effectively alone on Earth' date=' until such time as we can develop ways of spanning interstellar distances efficiently [b']AND[/b] learning to co-exist with each other, on this planet, in a sustainable lifestyle, that still incorporates scientific and technological development.

Humanity as a whole will never come together until a hostile alien force posses such a threat as to wipe all of us out, or perhaps enslave all of us.

.......Then people's attitudes will change. Not one second before.

Sad but true.

I think it will go a little bit different.

If humans would have to unite it would indeed be through encountering a dangerous alien force.

But before people would even notice that they are a great threath, half their fleet would need to be in position to take over our planet.

Of course the gouvernment would independently have noticed.

After they have launched their attack on earth then everybody would see that we only would be capable of defeating them through working together.

But before they would have notice that Russia, China and the USA would propably already have been beaten.

Cause I can't think why a invading force would not immidiatly try to beat the major forces of the earth.

I like what somebody said about us possibly being the eldest life forms. Could be true. I believe there is other life out there sentient or otherwise. I also believe that if FTL travel was possible we would have been contacted by weapon or greeting. Prime directive my ass. But I wonder..........What if only one in a million civilizations survived their own creations of WMD? That would once again make US a statistical improbability. But then again, it's not over yet.

OK, we got fossils of bacteria on mars. Life sustaining properties all over the vicinity of jupiter and saturn. Possible proof on life from a comet. Are you telling me that if we found all this in just the sol system, that their is no other sentient life in the universe.

As for no first contact, perhaps other species are having just as much trouble as SETI is.

But then again, it's not over yet.

The fat lady ain't sung yet.......

Our little 7 year jaunt to Mars may incite curiosity from someone......

As I stated before, it comes down to whether they are friendly or not.

If friendly, excellent. They may have tech that can help us. If hostile, I don't intend to be looking down the barrel of a plasma cannon for long.

.....I'll take'em out.

I'm not Picard.......I won't try to baffel them with bullshit. They point cannons at my ship, they'll wish to whatever gods they believe in that they didn't.

You, sir, present a very negative view of human nature. Certainly one that cannot be refuted with certitude. But I believe that we have the capacity for change, the capacity to treat each other better, the capacity for taking united action.

Perhaps we are doomed to a future where only the occasional Gandhi, Jesus, Dorothy Day, Mother Theresa, Martin Luther King Jr, St. Francis of Assissi, Mohammed, or Buddha rises above the the level of mass selfishness and shortsightedness.

But perhaps we can evolve socially, psychologically, and politically to where it doesn't take an external threat to unite us after all. Such a level of maturity would, after all, make us safe to unleashe upon the universe, beyond the confines of our own solar system.

Someone like Bush? In the next few years don't be surprised if laws are changed or military law comes into effect. The war on terrorism will be getting worse. And the Bush Dynasty must survive.

Sorry guys, i voted yes because i think that if we are not alone we should have had some sort of contact with something. We've been on this rock for two thousand years + and nothing has happened or will. Sorry but thats just regular fact strange as it is. But anyway maybe if we do colonize other planets their will be other species like us in a few million years. But other than that i think that even if their was life eslewere why would they even bother maybe they are just watching but they have a strict policy that won't allow them to allow direct contact with us. Or maybe they could be more primitive than we are.
