The Best TNG Film?

hmm..let's see..First Contact was considered the best, maybe because has a little bit of everything it needs to be succesful: interesting plot, plenty of action, fun, time travel, interesting an funny characters etc. and furthermore, there is a balance regarding all these elements. the other movies lack that balance

Insurrection, for instance is spectaculous, and its ideas are brilliant(e.g. spiritual development instead of technology, eternal youth, blind man having seen his first sunset, etc), but there's too much focus on Picard and Data, leaving the others not much to do...also, the relationship between Riker and Troi was superficially treated, and I didn't like the guns they had: after the small and efficient phasers they had in the series, I've expected something even smaller and efficient, and instead of that their weapons looked like nowadays guns!

when i first saw generations i found it a little bit boring, because it has little action. but is it only action that makes a good movie? it may be considered boring because it focuses on ideas and feelings and relationships rather than action. if you give it a chance you might find this movie has deep meanings, such as trying to escape reality, having doubts about the choices you've made in life, what is it that really matters in life. and i also liked a lot data experiencing his first emotions and trying to learn how to control them...

as for nemesis, ok, it isn't the best movie, but i liked it anyway...

Exactly, with First Contact the writers were able to balance out all the elements Hollywood requires for the box office with enough solid science fiction element to create one awesome movie.

First Contact is one of my favourite Trek movies full stop, and DEFINATELY the best TNG movie.

I'd have to say 'First Contact', simply because I thought the rest of 'em were, well, crappy. 'First Contact' just seemed to have some thought behind it, while the other movies just seemed like attempts to syphon off the series' name.

First Contact...

It's got action, suspense and all the rest nicely wrapped up into one movie sized package.

The one mistake - the Borg Queen. It inherently change the Borg from faceless baddies to essentially henchmen for a James Bond style baddie.

She's one step away from saying "So Picard... we meet again, FOR THE LAST TIME." It was the first step toward the Borg becoming a laughable means of filling in an episode.

It was also the only TNG film to have anything other than a one-on-one style fight involving the Enterprise... ok, Nemesis had... what 2-3 warbirds but that fight was mostly Enterprise vs. Schimitar and Insurrection was the Sonar ship vs. Billy and his amazing joystick.

It was kind of short but it was the only time the TNG films ever did a big space battle.

It doesn't seperate. It just blows up.

You and Steveo love Generations... I've had injections of Ebola I enjoyed more.

It's one of those movies that makes Starfleet look crap - their flagship destroyed by an old Klingon bird of prey

do you watch star trek just to see batlles? perhaps you you should considered the fact that, after all, it's star trek, not star wars. i think that it takes more than impressive battles to make a good movie!

All the old Enterprises got destroyed by a Klingon Bird of Prey:

1701: self destruct as a result of battle

A: battered to buggery through Chang's magic Bird of Prey

D: again, screwed through combat with bird of prey

Its a model Vs CGI thing, these films required impressive effects sequences, usually involving the ship being blown up, which meant there was not enough budgwt to design a new ship to blow it up -except III, which gave us the Bird of Prey.

I rewatched Generations yesterday and I have to say that its aged really well, having been forgotten for years as a kind of transatory oddity, much like the first Trek film.

Generations has everything youcould want from a Trek film, life/death, the nature thereof, Shat being loveable and confused, it feels like a natural sequence of cinematic events, the sequels feel formulaic, that said, obviously First Contact is as good if not better, but when viewed as part of a series it marks a step towards a reliance on formula over ideas.

Insurrection, feels like a pretty good episode extended to feature length.

Nemesis, just feels like a badly conceived proper feature film, so the two have a decent basis to battle it out between them.

If you watch Generations properly you see all of the TNG cast have something important to do, even Guinan, and this is despite of the fact that it is a transatory film.

There is talk that there was about an hour of filmed footage cut from Nemesis and a lot of this was the sort of character related stuff the film lacked. See the Wikipedia article for this. There is therefore good hope for a much extended cut of the film which gives TNG the sendoff it deserves.

Yeah i will admit that most of the TNG movies seem to be mainly about the captain - the rest of the crew didn't have much else to do with it

Generations was good in the fact that everyone had a part to play

I can't believe there are only 7 votes for Insurrection. Why didn't people like it? My guess is that people like Picard more as an action hero fighting a powerful enemy than as a gentle loving person - fighting a powerful enemy.

first contact just had a different feel to it. the rest had theyre moments . ie data giving himself up in nemisis. but this showed the origions of space travel in the universe of star fleet in a time not to far from ours and it just kinda hit home i reckon.

Insurrection played more like a long episode - as a friend commented after seeing it felt as though the titles were going to get a voice-over saying "And next on BBC2 - the Simpsons."

There was something... less than awe-inspiring about Picard et al, run around the place. Just... run of the mill.
