killbenau
thats just awsome. We have similar projects here in Australia. Our outback desert terain is quite similiar in some places to that of mars. by earth standards at the very least. The U.S. currently have a project happening though you rarely hear about it. such is life.

psheldrake1
There's a project also going on in the badlands of Alberta, Canada. It's quite intense. They're testing vehicles to be used and habitat structures.
thanatos355
yeah, but how would you REALLY test a habitat while still on earth. you just cant do it correctly!
psheldrake1
It is interesting though. The structures are half buried into walls. Utilizing caves would save alot of maintainence of the structure(s). Air locks could be installed.
thanatos355
granted, but no real way to test durability.
VonHelton
granted' date=' but no real way to test durability.[/quote'] The dustdevils on Mars can be quite intense........ Our first settlement should be somewhere near the Grand Canyon of Mars, in case we need its protection. :stare:
thanatos355
well, they might be able to find a more suitable location. maybe with a more docile climate.
VonHelton
well' date=' they might be able to find a more suitable location. maybe with a more docile climate.[/quote'] 'Fraid not.......Martian DustDevils are common all over Mars, so far as we know. ......We'll need serious shelter until sturdy buildings can be built. :(
thanatos355
so they'll just have to 'dig in'. probably a better idea then above ground dwellings anyway.
VonHelton
so they'll just have to 'dig in'. probably a better idea then above ground dwellings anyway. Like I said, the Martian Grand Canyon is probably the best bet. :stare:
thanatos355
well, there are any number of reasons that that wouldnt be the best idea. you can dig in pretty much anywhere after all.
psheldrake1
Alot better protection if you're in the canyon.

VonHelton
i cant help but see it as a huge wind tunnel throwing everything that isnt nailed down around like an angry child! Perhaps, but there may be gaps or "slots" we can safely hide in. ......Keep in mind that Mars Grand Canyon makes ours look like a toy. :D
