Antipodean
sadly as you grow older politically correct posturing takes a back seat to fiscal reality Yes yes. You are SOOO right, having financial burdens TOTALLY makes it impossible to have a political opinion, expecially a politically correct one. Much better just to be a bigot really. Oh yeah, all that political correctness is such a terrible burden... you know, good intentions, treating other people with respect. Even GAY people hate that huh? mcant- Or maybe you should just admit your gay friends don't exist and that you've got a few issues in that department - that ANYTHING but closeted homosexuality irks you? Foil
Can we deflame this one? It was actually a good discussion. I agree with points from both of you. I don't think mcant needs to be felt less human because he is uncomfortable with sexuality in public. Many of us are, whether it be hetero- or homosexual. I agree with some points that mccant said because a family member dealt with "not conforming". He was nearly suicidal over it. We all have issues with the...ah, issue. Some of us can deal with it better, that doesn't mean we are aweful gits if we have some issues with it. My family member was in a pretty awckward position. He was faced with being gay and felt wrong about it. So he compensated by expressing it more openly in conversation and often with people he barely knew. Most women would be uncomfortable if a man started discussing his sexuality with her without knowing her well. It makes me uncomfortable as well. But that doesn't disregard the fact that in this case, I am the majority. Gays are the minority and have to deal with things differently or they will just end up totally avoiding the issue and no progress is made for gaining acceptance. Thus, I feel we have to be more tolerant of Gay expression in public. That still doesn't make it easy for us, and I think this is what mcant was trying to say. Correct me if I'm wrong mcant. P.S.: I really like your avatar Antipodean, where is it from. You should go post in the "rate your avatar thread".

Antipodean
McCant: It is you who is displaying prepubescant tendencies by attacking me personally rather than engaging with the points I made. While I am of the opinion -as some my have gathered above- that what has comed to be termed 'political correctness' can constrict, rather than facilitate discussion on discrimination, acceptance of difference and such, McCant's attempt to write off the debate as irrelevant on grounds of politcal correctness in light of personal debt is an absurd one, but one used frequently by folk who wish to silence others when they can't engage the issues on their own merits. For your benefit McCant, I am no infant and no stranger to debt. You see, my finances do not preclude me from maintaining that expecting people to conform to a narrow range of normality is plain stupid in a world where people come in all shapes and sizes. Just as your finances don't proclude you from the politicalised notion that everybody should do just that. NB: TetsuoShima - Fair call, moving the thread. Taleitha
Why can't you get over it? They're ALL gay! Every single member of star fleet. Reasons: 1) the uniforms. Have you yet seen any kind of military body that designs flashy uniforms with colour coding? Or in spandex? 2) None of the ships that I can remember quickly have women's names. Lets take a quick look at any other western military body...ships/boats/dingies are named after women, famous people, or states. 3) ever seen an Army Commander quoting shakespeare? (See: Picard) 4) Janeway has to be gay, I say so....That then immediately makes 7 gay as well...also because I say so. If anybody challenges this, you'll kill my fantasies and break my heart. 5) see #1 :D (trying to move this topic away from flamable materials and back into semi-serious, semi-comedy realms)

bbbb
He's gay? So what? It's more interesting that (supposedly) Geordi LaForge was going to be a gay character but that got axed and that there was going to be an episode about two gay crew men and strong allusions to AIDS and that was dropped at the 11th hour. Good thing too. We don't need any more gay characters on Trek. There were plenty on DS9.
