imo there just creating options for themselfs, i.e a state of the art deflector array like miranda class, or a extra torpedo bay, like a miranda class, plus the necells allow them to make it out to be uber fast so they can run away alot like voyager.

However without knowing what that bit on top is it seems odd. They would have a great 360 view from there though. :)

Check out Wrath of Khan. The ship Khan takes over has one of those on top. On it's edges, it had phaser banks. There was one clip from the Enterprise viewscreen that shows it firing a photon torpedo out of the back of the center part, then later it fires another out the back of the same part again. Jugding from various shots of that area, on the front it had two torpedo banks and at least one on the back. So at the very least, the one on Riker's ship is a weapons array. It probably also functions as a sensor array. After all, it's gotta have targeting sensors in it for the weapons. And while you're putting those in, why not have those sensors capable of performing other kinds of scanning funtions? It is an exploration vessel.

 

As for the long warp nascelles... I think a suitable explanation for that was already given in a response to my other post in this topic.

So do we have a verdict yet on whether this Ship will be Riker's own, on some new extension of the Star Trek franchise? I'm assuming at this point that we're talking about books here, yeah?
