synexo
We didn't start the fire... Other than the other gay marriage poll on there, this poll was inspired by 'The moon is a harsh mistress', by Robert Heinlein. (which I just listened too) EDIT - DEFINITIONS: Heterosexual Marriage - 1 Man + 1 Woman Homosexual Marriage - 1 Man + 1 Man or 1 Woman + 1 Woman Polygamic Marriage - 1 Man + Several Women Polyandric Marriage - 1 Woman + Several Men Polyamoric Marriage - Any Number of Women and Men - Complex Paedophillial Marriage - 1 Man or 1 Women + 1 Girl or 1 Boy 'Boylove' 'Marriage' - 1 Man + 1 Boy 'Girl-love' 'Marriage' - 1 Man + 1 Girl Pederastic 'Marriage' - Greek-like Man-boy 'mentor' relationship Reading 'The Moon is a Harsh Mistress', and familiarizing yourself with marriage customs, and Greek social structures may help you answer more acurately. Also Pederastic relationships had been quite socially acceptable in the Greek world, as well as similar relationships in other pre-christian societys. You might also consider that many boys around the onset of puberty, may actually desire a sexual relationship with an adult female.

Ruk
Should there be marriage at all? I mean, isn't it rather outdated? Nah, I don't think so. Being married has proven benefits to the stability of families. Likewise as a form of contract thats widely acknowleged worldwide, it greatly simplifies the whole inheritance/money/legal issues involved in getting together and raising a family. Besides, saying its "outdated" makes you sound like Britney and Kevin... "I believe in love, but I don't believe in marriage" ugh. *lol* hehe I am soooo moving to england now!!! I think Mississippi still is at age 14.

What if you're not interested in raising a family? You could just not get attached to anybody, stay single, footloose, and fancy free. :)
Ruk
What's love got to do with it? Usually helps keep the marriage happy, but not required. What if you're not interested in raising a family? Marriage has plenty of benefits even for those who choose not to have kids. You could just not get attached to anybody, stay single, footloose, and fancy free. Didn't say there was anything wrong with that. Choosing not to get married doesn't outdate the concept though.

mcant
true anecdote .. about 20 years ago when we were all young and daft my friend had this absolutely gorgeous girlfriend with a figure most women would ill for.. she had one disadvantage as a girlfriend. she was a complete oversexed slut. anyone anywhere. anytime... to cut a long story short it turned out she was 12.... yes TWELVE!!!! I would have sworn blind she was 19. at the time I was 26 so I'm very reticent in throwing the first stone in paedophilia cases
StitchInTime
Somebody that age is not considered responsible, but adults are responsible for finding these things out before they get involved, or, when they find out, breaking off the relationship. It's a question of the power imbalance between adults and children. Adults have a lot more power. Unfortunately, in such cases, it often turns out that there's a history of childhood sexual abuse, and it's that which causes the child to behave in that way. To interpret this behaviour as being the same in a child as it is in an adult it a huge mistake, though it is often used as an excuse by people who overtly practice paedophelia.
