Elessar
I was wondering if anybody knew the truth about how Picard and Guinan became friends...In "Best of Both Worlds" Guinan says that her and Picard are "closer than friends, more than family". Does anybody know how they met and why they're so close?
maverick
its a while since i saw TNG but cant you find some answers in times arrow? thats the one where theyre all dressed up and mark twain is in it?
NiteShdw
In that episode, the only reference to them meeting is that Guinan asks Picard, "Do you remember the first time we met?" "Of course" "Don't be so sure". In other words, Guinan first meets Picard on Earth in the early 20th century. However, we don't know when Picard 'first' met Guinan. thanatos355
i allways wanted to know the second part of that. the 'how' from picard's perspective.
bbbb
I would say that the one in the 19th century was the first time we saw them meet. The second time was merely a reunion of sorts (for Guinan at least).
daffydk
They also didnt explore Guinan's species much other than a few times indicating that they live for a very long time. In a Q episode they show her and Q almost about to fight but they back off. I thought for a second she had q type powers. But then in encounter at Far point or was it another one where the borg come and she says that the borg messed up their species. I thought well she couldnt have had Q ty pe powers. Maybe Even Gene Rodenbery never got the story right :) Either way it was an intriguing character and Woopie Goldberg played her part (although a very small one in ten forward) very well. bbbb
The early seasons of TNG may not have been as good as the later ones but they were still fairly good in that they showed us some mysterious elements of the series that were intruiging but never explained. Some, like the Conspiracy episode were very well set up but forgotten, or in the parasites case, pushed aside.
martog
I like season two, and it is an eary season. I would stack it up against season six anyday.
lt.com. Rheya
Either way it was an intriguing character and Woopie Goldberg played her part (although a very small one in ten forward) very well. agree. actually i heard that that role was created at her request to play in the series... in generations, she and picard also meet on the nexus...so i think it makes no sense trying to look for "a first time' be cause they met out of time(sort of). anyway, i liked that mistery of her... TetsuoShima
Someone's been digging up old posts. It's fun to see replies from 'the old guard' again though... :)
Amnot Borg
It just shows that some new members are actually interested in scifi opinions and fellowship. ...instead of what this place was made famous over. I like it better this way. although I miss the other things.
Arktis
Awww I miss 'em too. *plays Amazing Grace on harmonica* It's strange, because Guinan's relationship with Picard was said by her to go "beyond friendship". And in Time's Arrow, we can see what looks like attraction between the two of them. Now maybe I am seeing something that isn't there, but I think that her and Picard were intimate at one point or another if you know what I mean. Nudge-nudge, wink-wink ;) ;), say no more. :cyclops: At any rate, I think somone says at some point that they didn't really know eachother until Guinan came on board, which was at some point AFTER Tasha dies as was said in the episode titled Yesterday's Enterprise and later verified at the end of the episode to also be true for the actual timeline. That's about as much as I know about it. As far as Guinan having powers, we do know that her perception of time is somehow different, which seems to be a characteristic of her race as stated by Picard. If we are to follow cannon, then it would seem that Guinan is more unique than other members of her race, since other El Aurians we meet do NOT appear to have any special abilities beyond this, but Guinan apparently does as evidenced by her Mexican Stand-Off with Q. Amnot Borg
say no more, say no more, what's it like? I love Monty Python. Certainly sounded like something happened we, the viewers, never got to see. An episode never written, a moment never shared. I think you have hit on a new topic for a novel. Or at the very least, a fan written story. Arktis
Further info: Guinan also tells Geordi that she is attracted to bald men. :stare:
Tenebrae
Beyond very long life-spans and their temporal perception... and intuition, the El-Aurians probably don't differ much from other races. I mean, think about it - if you had awesome Q like powers, you're not exactly going to let yourself get a kicking from the Borg. I don't think she was trying to stand-off against Q... I think she was just confronting him. Just for a posturing thing - just because you stand in front of some and act aggressive, doesn't mean you're going to fight them. It might simply mean you want to make your point.
subspatial
I'd even go further and think that: ...thinking entirely hypotheticly though.... El-Aurians (having special Temporal abilities) may be a little beyond Q's basic abilities... ie. They may have means of counter-acting Q's Space-Time abilities. In the Q Continuum books I remember Q referring to a few of the other "higher species" that the Q have little interaction with... I'd love to read more about it, has anyone read any ST books with more info on Guinan?
Tenebrae
As I said - if Guinan could have mucked Q up... then why the hell would they get beaten by the Borg? I find it hard to imagine any "regular" species being effective against a race in the Q league. It's like saying God needs to worry about humans. Arktis
As I said, Guinan is probably unique among her people in that she has abilites that others lack. Similar to Wesley having super awesome time-space powers even though he's just human.
