Berman Expects New Producer For Next TV Trek

When there is a new Star Trek series, Rick Berman does not expect to be a part of it.

Like his fellow Enterprise executive producer Brannon Braga (story), Berman told Star Trek Magazine (via Sci Fi Pulse) that when Paramount decides to revive the television franchise, "it’s going to be the result of someone fresh, someone who has not been extensively involved with Star Trek, coming up with a new approach to the series."

"I think when Roddenberry created The Next Generation it was similar in many ways to the original shows, but obviously with a brand – new cast and a lot of new elements to the universe and to the spaceship," he added. "But since then, we did nearly 700 hours of Star Trek." To reinvigorate it, Berman noted, a new show will "have to be something very fresh and new, and my guess is that it would very possibly be from someone other than the people who have been creatively involved with it in the past."

Though Berman is still attached to the eleventh Star Trek feature film, he said that the story for that film "is still up in the air." Originally it was planned to be a prequel set between Enterprise and the original series, but Berman said, "Whether the next movie takes place there or whether it takes place at another point, I think that the studio's feeling is that it would be nice to try to do a feature film with a fresh, new, no-television-series crew." He expected that that would negate any possibility of using characters from the existing shows.

"By the way, I would say that the film is still in the same early stages of development it was the last time we talked," Berman noted, admitting that no progress had been made. He is currently working on other television series for the next development season, the details of which he could not discuss.

For more, including Berman's memories of James Doohan and Robert Wise, the original article is in issue #124 of Star Trek Magazine. These excerpts are from Sci Fi Pulse.

I don't see what was wrong with Berman - i mean look at what's been made already - most of it's very good - i mean it is why many of us are here now!

but it might be nice to get a new prospective on things....hopefully anyway :)

I suspect that Berman and Co have been bored with Star Trek for some time. It's definately time for someone fresh at the helm - definately somebody with a passion for star trek.

And I'm definately glad that Berman's comments ride on an assumption that there IS more star trek yet to come.

There's hope yet ladies and gentlemen!

Anyone that says "I don't care how - just give me more X as fast as you can." is the person that you LEAST want to listen to.

Yes obviously quality is important - but i think that what we've had so far from Trek is of high quality - i certainly enjoyed Star Trek so far and the fact that Berman is no longer producing it may be a blessing or a curse

The Enterprise series to me did for Trek what everybody want a new producer to do. To me it was the same, but so much different than all the other series in recent (80's onward) years. I liked the focus on action and development of tech. I liked the revival of old species from TOS. Right from the opening song of Enterprise I thought that something new was finally being attempted. Unfortunately it got them cancelled. I just wish they could have shown the development of shields a bit more.

Maybe they have to go back to the same old same old that worked for 15 Years. Oh well, who can say. New can mean good or bad. Lets hope for the best.

I think you are right that we need a fresh aproach to ST. I think Enterprise struggled because it was different but also because it was a prequal which most of us are getting sick of.

I think a new series would have to be set post 2380 (ST:Nemesis) but with some new concept of exploration maybe a new 5 year mission :)

I'm glad they've given up on the whole prequel movie idea. Trip is dead, so how would they go about that? Make a hologram of him like they did in the series finale? As for Berman and Braga leaving, its about time because he's been doing it for so long, they need new blood.

Drat!! I want a movie where something happens to Sisko!! He's still in limbo and so am I. Yes, a movie where TNG/DS9/Voyager left off would be great, especially if Voyager (refurbished from 30 years in future) were at least partly involved. Something that at least gets Sisko out of limbo and back w/his family on DS9. Am not saying movie has to be primarily about DS9, but at least include it enough to allow resolution of the Sisko problem.

Of course if they do, it would be great if they'd show the wormhole aliens as something other than quasi-gods. As Kirk once said, "We find the One true God sufficient" (paraphrased, and spoken by Kirk when Apollo wanted to be worshipped at a god in Who Mourns for Adonais). Kirk may have been an immoral fornicator (as all fornicators are), but at least he knew that there's truly only one supreme creator of the universe. I never did like the fact that the Bajorans considered the wormhole beings as "gods", so it would be nice if we could see them exposed at the mere created beings as they are. (Sort of like Q was exposed as such eventually.)

That's the problem with rights - everyone wants a piece of the action. So, if you want to use an existing character that you didn't create you have to pay for it. This is why Tom Paris was created.

Some of you may have noticed that the actor had appeared previously - apparently, they were going to use the character he originally played in TNG but because Ronald D. Moore and someone else had the rights, they basically created an almost identical character.
