Tenebrae
I think the value of the transporter in establishing tactical beach heads is massive... But then, they never really seemed to concentrate on ground combat in Trek, it's all about flying around in the ships... which I suppose is fairly sound given that without planetary defences, any ground base resistance can be decimated from space. TFMF
Indeed the only instances i can think of are in the DS9 eps 'Nor the Battle Strong' and 'The Seige of AR557' or whatever it was called - and even in these battles - it was mainly just phaser riffles and disruptor weapons - not much more like Transporters and such... Naikou
dampening fields' and 'disruption fields, used quite frequrently to block transporters, but yes, what's the point of going in with groundforces, unless they got something you want...if it's dominion troops down there? just blockade'em, and let the jem'hadar go cold turkey on white after a few weeks. GhostShadow
well Star Fleet has a marien branch of their military. i mean the Ships are like the Navey, they even use navy ranks. but Star Fleet Mariens would use the Transporter a lot.
TFMF
From 'Nor the Battle Strong' we learn the Feds use things called Hoppers i think it was - they are like troop carriers probably - they can probably use them to move about the battle field...
