Taking the plunge, where do I start first?

Im just not convinced those episodes would sell a total newbie on dr who, especially if theyre into mainly big budget stuff, which lets face it, dr who isnt! and to its credit, because you dont need a star wars budget to deliver good viewing. I dig most of the surviving who episodes, cept most of the mcoys, they are just painful!

From the point of view of not being put off by cheesy special effects, I would recommend more (pseudo) historical stories:

The Aztecs,

The Talons of Weng Chiang

Black Orchid

The Visitation

the King's Demons

or stories that have dated well (IMHO) such as

Genesis Of Daleks

Ark In Space

The Ice Warriors

The five Doctors

Frontios

Kinda (Well apart from the bloody big Snake at the end)

EarthShock

Vengeance On Varos

The Curse Of Fenric

Ghostlight

Just for a good sampling and the episodes i watch over and over again.

"The Awakening" -Peter Davidson- Good short episode that has a lot happening.

"The Visitation" -Peter Davidson- A supporting character (Richard Mace) steals almost all the scenes.

"The Green Death" -Jon Pertwee- Good story about ecological disaster and the Doctor in drag.

"The Mark of the Rani" -Colin Baker- Historical piece where The Master makes an apperance and you meet the Rani for the first time.

"The Talons of Weng Chiang" -Tom Baker- Lovely homage to Sherlock holmes. Watching Leela upsetting Victorian police with her description of how to stab someone, priceless.

"The Androids of Tara" -Tom Baker- My favorite one. Peter Jeffrey's Count Grendel is one of the best melodramtic villians ever.

Personally, I think it's hard to go past a Robert Holmes penned story (Krotons & 2 Docs excepted)

It doesn't matter what the effexcts are, just sit back & enjoy the characters.

Truly great Doctor Who depends on the writing & acting, not on the effects. Even with a bigger budget in the new series, that is still true.

No offence to you, but why do you spell it Davidson ?

I see this typo alot and I dont understand why as it is clearly in the end credits.

And I am honestly curious and not having a go at you or anything :)

Because I check this forum usually very early or I am very tired when I write, so mistakes happen :stare:
