rabban
I've been watching star trek since I was a kid but I'm not into the fandom or the merchandise of it all...the only thing star trek i do is i can do the vulcan salute with both hands...but i'm a lefty so...well we are just like that i guess. I'm new to the forum and after seeing the visitor episode of ds9 for the second time in my life I have got to say I got tears streaming down my face again!!! I mean wow it has been 10 years since I've seen it...and it's the only show, movie or anything i have seen that can move me to tears. ...anyway I decided to look up the visitor and see if there were any responses like mine...sure enough it has got an award and voted one of the best episodes ever...so i'm wondering how you guys felt about the episode? Mav
I wasn't a huge Jake Sisko fan but Visitor was a great episode. It added a new twist on the sometimes-overused time travel/warp angle. Quite sad but still a terrific piece of Trek writing.
rabban
the only other jake sisko episode i liked involved his essay on courage in the dominion war... i was more frustrated with worf's son though time travel or no...jake did his own thing i just wish he behaved more like that episode suggested...i mean it would be cool if he was more of a bohemian type... TFMF
Yeah i thought this was a great episode - it wasn't really like any other episode and it really was an emotional episode - i think if it was just the Old Jake Sisko telling the story without seeing what actually happened - it would have still been a great episode - Tony Todd (i think it was who played older jake) is a great actor and played the role very well :)
GhostShadow
I liked that eps. it was a reminder of how fragil life is, even in the 24th centery. even the smallest mistake can take some thing precious from you. So i got a littel 'watery' and felt something.
Marcroft
the fourth season really showed how well the ds9 actors could act, and really gave for some really intense episodes. The Visitor was great, and really worked well for such a contained episode - really only being set in Jake's House. Some of Treks and DS9's finest moments have really come from such intimate character driven plots. One of DS9's shinning moments.
TFMF
Indeed. And i found (which i know can only be a conincidence) that Voyager really did get so much better by Season 4 as well (and i'm not just talking about the inclusion of 7of9 here ;) ) but the writing and acting got so much better - this is also the same for TNG i think - it's weird but it think it just takes time for a series to get really good. I think the episodes before Season 4 are still great of course but things do start happening when we get to that stage.
Nightmare
It was a great episode but "The Begotten" with the infant changeling was much more emotional.
Tenebrae
Seasons 4-5 were definitely DS9's strongest. 1 was just a bunch of random episodes straight from the trek episode generator. 2-3 were decent but took it a bit slow 4-5 had the stage set and made good use of it... but 6-7 started to get a bit cheesy. Plus they either got too bogged down in the war by then or conversely forgot about it. But the Visitor was definitely one of the better time travel episodes that Trek has done. Up there with Yesterday's Enterprise.
Hrimmer
When it first aired, i tried to watch DS9, and I just couldnt get into it. So It dropped from my radar. Years later I was sitting around channel surfing and this Star Trek episode came on, it turned out to be The Visitor. It completely changed my view of DS9. This was a great story, it happened to be in a science fiction setting, but it was at its core a human story. A well written, well acted and well directed, heart wrenching story of love, faith, never giving up.. (and a bit of madness) After that, I let go of my prejuduce against a non-Enterprise based Star Trek show, and grew to really enjoy DS9 for what it was. (Still not a fan of the first few seasons though... not gonna lie) I've been watching star trek since I was a kid but I'm not into the fandom or the merchandise of it all...the only thing star trek i do is i can do the vulcan salute with both hands...but i'm a lefty so...well we are just like that i guess. bbbb
Visitor really was a great episode of Trek because it depicts the pain that comes from losing a loved one. In this case Jake must deal with that over and over again. His father dosen't age but he does and the pain never goes away.
Arktis
The Visitor was just a reminder of how people love to be entertained by suffering... it makes them feel noble or something.
Mav
I actually rewatched Visitor the other day (going back through seasons 4-7 of DS9). I noticed something, if you look past Jake trying to get his father back and later on giving his father a second chance, you notice how much the Alpha Quadrant falls apart without Captain Sisko. He's not there to help stave off the Klingons and later help reforge the Alliance with them, he's not there during the entire Dominion War (though that many years when Jake's an old man, I guess we assume we won some how...) but alot of things changed that could have been influenced or helped by Captain Sisko being alive and not dead. maverick
i liked the episode. it was very sad and a good tale. on the lighter side, it took a little away from things that older jake was played by the same guy who played kurn, worfs brother
ceedj
Outstanding episode, much in the vein of TOS's City on the Edge of Forever or VOY's Timeless, with a far more tragic core to the story. Tony Todd was brilliant as older Jake, Rachel Robinson had just the right amount of innocence and wide eyed wonder without being too sugarary, the regular cast was great, and David Livingston pulled it all together in a fantastic package. Probably my favorite episode in all of Trek. It occurs to me what a great guest cast Trek has had over the years: James Sloyan, Vaughn Armstrong, Tony Todd, Jeff Combs, JG Hertzler, Louise Fletcher, just about ALL the Cardassians (am I the only one who loved seeing Lawernce Pressman, Robert Mandan, & Gregory Sierra and saying "80's TV stars! Yes!) David Ogden Stiers.and others. Good stuff. :)
Wazer
I really liked "The Visitor" too but one thing that did annoy me was how emotional Captain Sisko was. After having grown up on Picard with his detatched and hidden emotions, Benjamin Sisko always seemed to never hold back and this made me a bit uncomfortable. The statement that a boy never gets over the death of his father would have rung more true if he were younger and had no support. As to the alpha quadrant falling apart even that was a bit unbelievable since in was the Klingons ( a troubled race as seen throughout the rest of DS9 ) not the dominion it was a bit strange that only Ben Sisko could resolve that. His prime importance was his relationship with the Wormhole aliens which certainly would have affected future events in the quadrant.
