Mav
A "barrier" can be breached - that is, surpassed. Can anybody think of a way in which you could surpass the simultaneous occupation of all points in space? "Omnipitence" B)
queenhank
Yes, yes, we've established that Q can, in fact, change the laws of physics, and even the very concept of mathematics, so as to make it possible to go faster than infinite speed. However, barring the change of the fundamental workings of the universe, there is no "beyond" infinity, and thus Warp 10 is not a "barrier" so much as a theoretical construct. Ulysses
If my memory serves me right but in star trek the voyage home didnt kirk sling shot around the sun to gain enough speed to enter time warp?
Tenebrae
To infinity AND BEYOND.
queenhank
Yes. But that was still slower than Warp 10. See, Warp Drive works by warping space so as to travel through Subspace. When traveling around the sun, they picked up speed in regular space, causing a warp in time, which allowed them to travel backward in time. Tenebrae
To be fair - the logic of "time warp" was never properly explained. That's definitely something that just has to be written off as treknology.
queenhank
Well, a time warp is something which has often been theorized about in the scientific community, but never proven even possible. As such, many forms of time warp have been theorized, and so used in science fiction. Star Trek, especially. So, with time warp, just take the Janeway approach, and realize you probably won't understand it, because chances are nobody will.
Mav
If my memory serves me right but in star trek the voyage home didnt kirk sling shot around the sun to gain enough speed to enter time warp? If I recall right, the Voyage Home was the one where they encounter the massive ship that is disrupting Earth's weather system, and communicates in a form very similar to humpback whales of the 21st century. Since they were extinct in the 22nd and 23rd century (I forget which time period TOS was in), Kirk uses a Klingon Warbird (since the Enterprise was gone) to slingshot off of a sun, this allowed him and the ship to travel back in time to retrieve the whales to bring back to the future. It had it's moments but not the best trek movie.
queenhank
Definitely. Not the greatest, but not the worst, either. Of course, they had done the same thing previously in an episode of TOS.
Tenebrae
And of course, giant probe that had something to do with Earth coming from far, far away which only the crew of the Enterprise (err, Bird of Prey) can stop was quite similar to TMP... although, obviously hanging out in 20th century earth has been done about a MILLION times. That's one of the rules of time-travel. It's surprising how often you can be anywhere in the galaxy and just turn up at Earth. Frequently around the late 20th century. queenhank
Although we have seen a time when they ended up in the mid 21st century...and another in the early 20th...
Tenebrae
True. That's why I said frequently and not always. ;) One does wonder what those time cops are doing most of the time...
