Anyone here like TNG's First Season best?

I know I'm probably in the minority, but I really like TNG's first season. It has some dumb stories of course, but when it's firing on all cylinders, it is REALLY good. It has a feeling of exploration & danger into unknown & distant territories.

Later seasons feel like a Sunday drive. Yawn. Not that they are not entertaining.... just a little too "normal" for my tastes. I prefer Season 1's "edge of your seat" feeling of uncertainty. Same feeling the original Trek had.

well the first and second series did also use some script idea's from The Original Series - and so had a very TOS feel to it.

Hard to believe though that the Borg was first encountered in Series 2 when you think of the nature of some of the other episodes.

Not really - thought TNG got better as it went on - Season 1 was perhaps the worst season - getting a bit better in Season 2 (shame to see Tasha Yar go though) and then Season 3 + was better and kept on improving right through to the end...

When you compare season 1 and season 7 together they seem like completely different shows. I wouldn't say that one was better than the other however. I think both were very strong showings of the ideals of the creators.

What bothers me are the in between series. While they are all just as good you can see that in the first few series they try to inject some of what we see in series 7 (like focus on character, politics) while in the later series you see them try and work out how much of the earlier ideas should be used (the progression of humanity, awe and wonder).

There is just something more pure about seasons 1 and 7.

I loved, and at the same time, hated season 1.

I loved it cause, it introduced me into Star Trek. I started watching around season 5-6 but I caught as many s1-4 reruns as I could and of course s1 was the beginning point. I look back on it now and I realize it was what began one of if not my favorite show.

At the same, it was awful. I never could stand Tasha's character compared to Worf as a tactical officer. I also felt (no offense to any female forum members) that they were pushing women down our throats that season, between Tasha as head of security, Troi as the ships partially telepathic counsoler and Dr. Crusher as the female doctor. I'm all for equality but it was such a huge difference than TOS. I for one liked that they got rid of the stupid female dresses for uniforms.

Season 2 was great IMO, it was a building season, setting up plot points for the rest of the series.

I think that season one was more inventive, we didn't know what was out there, or even if we could handle what we came across. The camera shots were much more inventive, and it had a more original and creative feel to it. It also seemed like a more serious show, not that later seasons were light hearted really, its just the wrap ups in the last five minutes of the episode, where a complex inescapable or incomprehendable problem would be easily parallelled to a modern convenience and we would all slap our forheads and say "Of Course! How could we have been so blind!!"

first season had some over acting and kind of a classic trek cheesiness,

in later seasons the actors were obvoiusly much more comfortable with their roles, but didn't seem to be driving towards the unkown, they were always on route to so and so for such and such, or on rondevous with some other starship, what happened to them exploring?

I think the middle of the series was the best (especially after Wesley left) but would honestly had to give most of my attention to DS9. (The little I saw of Enterprise was good, but that wasn't much)

Welcome to the Forum! :)

anyway - i think i have to agree here - the word 'cheesiness' is a word i'd use to describe much of the first 2 or 3 seasons - that dosn't mean it was bad and this certainly went away. Although i have only recently seen much of TNG so at the time it was made - it won't have seemed so bad....
