theaveng
(NOTE: This topic is about *entertainment* not news or politics. Please don't hijack my thread. Thank you.) You can buy music/tv shows on tape. You can buy music/tv shows via downloading. But there should never come a time where you HAVE to pay. It should be voluntary. IMHO Radio and Television entertainment should always be free. Just erect an antenna & there it is. I can get ~15 tv stations & ~40 radio channels just with a simple antenna. Free of charge. No $$$$. Did I mention it was free? ;) That's an important consideration for us poor people. Let the RICH corporations pay for my tv. *Steal from the rich (corporations). Give to the poor their free music/tv. *(It's not actually stealing since the corporations voluntarily give away their dollars, for the purchase of ads) troy
theaveng
Not counting my internet cable (which is also provided by my television cable company) $250.00 for specific shows/stations that have no commericals and such is not too bad a deal. You figure we're paying almost $100 a month on tv' date=' I have a 'digital cable' package [/quote'] The difference? That digital cable is *voluntary* and you don't have to pay it (I have no cable). The $250 license fee is Compulsory. I don't like being told I HAVE to do something. It should be my choice. Oh, and I've seen the so-called "commercial-free" tv from the BBC. They still have commercials during the last 15 minutes of the hour.... usually self-promotion. (Ditto PBS in the States.) So what's the difference? The commercials are still there, just moved to the end of the program.*** And finally, it's just entertainment. It's not worth it to me to pay for what is, basically, a time-killer. I agree with my parents, "If they start charging for TV, I'll throw it in the trash and listen to the radio instead." * (AISDE: You ever seen German TV? I don't know if it's still like this today, but back in the 90s's German TV was funded by corporate commercials BUT they don't show the ads during programs. They show the ads every day between 6 and 7 pm. Normally you'd think "just don't watch them", but German commercials are *hilarious*. I love watching German ads...they're like mini-commedies.) theaveng
[1] TV's free excepting you have to buy a television to see anything. [2] You have to spend your time waiting through ads to see the programme you're interested in. [3] You have to watch on their schedule, thereby forcing you to change your schedule to fit theirs. (1)TVs only cost ~$25 here in the U.S. And they typically last 15-20 years, so only ~$1.50 per year.... hardly a budget-buster compared to a $250 a year license tax. (2) Who watches commercials??? I usually go pee, or go get a snack, or flip through a magazine. (Or fast-forward.) Commercials are extremely easy to ignore & not a hassle at all. (3) True, but that's why I can add a VCR for another ~$25, so I can watch when I feel like watching. Bottom line, time is more readily-available to me, than Money. I can't afford to spend money like you rich people & can only afford the FREE tv. I couldn't afford a $250 a year license fee. (Also the reason why I download at only ~30 kbps over the phone line instead of having ~$45 a month Cable. Can't afford Cable.)[/b]
