Potato
Well, now that we have Christmas out of the way and I'm back on a semi regular basis lets get the first half of season 6 out of the way... Dominators: On the planet Dulkis the travellars run up against the alien Dominators and their deadly robot Quarks. The Dominators are planning to turn the planet into a radioactive slag to fuel their space fleet. The Dulicians are pacifists who refuse to fight off the invaders. The Doctor manages to intercept the Atomic seed that the Dominators were going to use to implement their plan and he hides it on thier ship which is destroyed in the atomic blast. The TARDIS is in the path of a lava flow... Mind Robber: To escape the lava flow the TARDIS jumps out of Space/Time and into the Land of Fiction. They encounter many fictional characters while battling the Master of the Land, who wants the Doctor to take his place. Eventually, Zoe discovers the true Master of the Land, a giant computer. The travellers overload the computer and escape. Invasion: Landing in 20th Century London the travellers stop at the home of Professor Travers. There they meet Isobel Watkins who, with her Uncle, is renting the place. Prof. Watkins is missing and the Doctor and Jamie go to International Electromatics to try to find him. They meet the managing director, Tobias Vaughn, and the Doctor doesn't trust him. It transpires that Vaughn is being investigated by the newly formed UNIT (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce) led by, now Brigadier, Letbridge-Stewart. Vaugn is helping the Cybermen invade through the sewers of London. The TARDIS crew, with the help of UNIT and eventually Vaughn (who has been betrayed by his Cyber-Allies), foil the invasion and rescue Watkins. Krotons: The Gonds are ruled and taught by the Kroton Machine. The Krotons are waiting in suspended animation until they have drained enough mental energy from the Gonds' brains to be reanimated. Zoe and the Doctor take the Kroton Machine test and reanimate the Krotons. The Doctor then discovers that the Kroton life system is based on telurium and destroys them with sulphuric acid. Since I'm the one starting this thread, I get to indulge myself by picking the Krotons as the main story for discussion. This was the first Who story that I saw (in movie format on PBS) and coincidentally was also the second Who story that I saw (many years later in movie format on a different PBS station). I therefore have a soft spot for it. I love how the Krotons "wobble menacingly". Not the best designed monster to ever appear but the story is well written and hangs together nicely. It doesn't have many effects shots, which goes a long way in helping it not to look too dated now (even if it's in BW). It is the strength of this story that got me to sit down a year later and watch Robot and to comeback a couple more times before Revenge of the Cybermen got me hooked. This means that the Krotons is the reason I'm a Who fan, because on the strength of Robot alone I probably wouldn't have given the show a second glance. Potato
I guess no one wants to discuss the Classic Who stories any more. Such a shame, especially since we were almost to the color episodes.
Fenriswolf
I really wonder if people miss the sticky since they do blend in with each other?

Antilles
Hi all, I'MMM BAAAACK! Good to see Fenris still here too, (loving the avatar/sig) I got a ton of catching up to do, I really missed all our Who discussions, and boy didnt ya just love the Xmas special...even more so with the teaser trailer, those Cybermen look wicked...not too sure about K-9, wasnt he the beginning of the end for Tom Bakers Doctor, maybe RTD can do a better job with him this time. Glad to see Potato has been keeping the classic discussions going since....Oh when did I leave? August I think it was, blimey time flies. Back just in time too with a new season upon us, drooling already! Sooo, Im not gonna ramble on, Ill chat in here and PM's. PS I got techie catching up to do too, anyone have problems with Firefox? Antilles
I thought I should discuss Potatos story since thats what this thread is about hehe! I so love the old black and whites, I dunno why, Im not THAT old, theres just something magical about them and also its good to go back in time ourselves and see how they were handled in those days. Troughton was a genius (as well as a clown) and Id like to see Tennant bring a little of his impishness into the character. At times he acted like such a coward in the face of danger (but who wouldnt I guess) but he showed great strength when needed. I only just watched the Dominators a few days ago and I enjoy the part when the Doc and Jamie are about to be tested and the Dr is not sure whether to act stupid or intelligent as he wasnt sure wheteher that would be beneficial to the Dominators or not, Im glad he went for the stupid approach as it was hilarious to watch. As for the Krotons I havent watched for a very long time so cant remember too much. Am I correct in tinking that it was the first (and only) time we saw the TARDIS' self defence mechanism in operation? HADS (Hostile Action Displacement System....I think). I wish there were more Troughton stories for watching, such a shame they were destroyed.
Pella
This is the major factor for me (and for others I guess), I canlt really discuss many of the B/W episodes because I haven't seen them and they no longer exist. I loved the Mind Robber (especially how they overcame Frazer Hines illness - sheer genius), but I felt it went on a little too long. It was similar set up to the Celestial Toymaker, but far superior in it's execution. The thing that makes me wonder is how many people want the Master in the mind robber to be a previous incarnation of of the Doctor's archenemy when it's quite clearly defined that the Master in the Mind Robber is a human author of 'boys own' stories trapped in the world of Fiction. It's been a long time since I've seen the story - Who was the hidden Villian controlling the Master - did we ever find out.
Antilles
I dont think we ever found out, Im going to have to watch this myself again now :) Plus itll be nice to see that rare white Tardis for a split second again!

Potato
It's been a long time since I've seen the story - Who was the hidden Villian controlling the Master - did we ever find out. In the Virgin NA's, Conundrum or possibly Head Games, it is revealed to be the gods of ragnorok (from Greatest Show in the Galaxy).

Antilles
Its gets colour right after the War Games when Jon Pertwee (all hail the scarecrow) becomes the Doctor and the stories are more Earth-bound with UNIT playing a major role. Sort of an early look at what I hope Torchwood will be like! And dont worry about being behind, these posts should be available to read for some time. All you need is a simple classic episode guide. Click on my sig pic for access to BBC official site and go to classic series.
