Robot Soldiers in our future.

Since I'm very interested in the field of Robotics and Prosthetics I found this article extremely interesting. I'm far more interested in the technology side of robotics than the military applications, but I know that there's no use in asking people to focus on that here. Take a look at this article and post your thoughts.

Quoted from the article---> "Already, however, several hundred robots are digging up roadside bombs in Iraq, scouring caves in Afghanistan and serving as armed sentries at weapons depots.

By April, an armed version of the bomb-disposal robot will be in Baghdad, capable of firing 1,000 rounds a minute. Though controlled by a soldier with a laptop, the robot will be the first thinking machine of its kind to take up a front-line infantry position, ready to kill enemies.

"The real world is not Hollywood," said Rodney A. Brooks, director of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at MIT and a co-founder of the iRobot Corporation. "Right now we have the first few robots that are actually useful to the military." <---End Quote.

A scary thought - but also very cool!

It would be nice if only the robots did the fighting, though...

It'd be a bit like playing race-car cards: "mine has a gizillion mega-trons, a deathray - and also 5 cylinders!" :D

I know this will probably unleash a torrent of criticism, but personally, I would rather fight for oil than religious ideals. How many wars have been fought under that guise?

(This is not to imply that I want to fight for oil, it's just establishing the order of importance.)

I think you're very right Oma. I would not want to delegate the authority and ability to take the life of another human life to a machine. (Although how is that really differant from minefields, etc.) But I do think that it would be better to have a mechanical proxy be injured than the usual consequenses of war. However, that will never quite become reality. If two groups fight a war using robots and mechanical proxies, the results are simply. He who has the biggest budget wins! (For the most part, I know that tactics play a role.) In reality though, how is that so differant from the way it is now, and has pretty much always been?

No machine is as durable or as effective as the origenal...man. Even has a quinternary coding system as opposed to that outdated binary system used by robots.

The future of war will always be controlled by man (especially after weve all seen terminator and matrix) perhaps the only difference is what we see today, remote controls and body armor.

I kindda wonder what shape the robot warriors would take...they don't have to resemble man.... what if they become spider sized...with a needle to inject a poison with....I don't think I'd feel safe with spider sized object then...not that I am know...but...you know...

It has it's moments. Tom Selic 80's Movie.

Oh...that one... Well, the tiny bots I was thinking of would be more of a 50/50 mechanichs and nanobots....making 'em more flexible.

Actually, by using those it wouldn't be difficult controlling an entire population through terror (the word does have more than one meaning, thank you very much)
