espurious
Hi folks. This isn't really related to anything on the site, but I need help, and if theres one thing I've learned in my short time here, it's that niteshdw forum peeps are a knowledgable bunch. here it is. My g/f has been having trouble with an ex of hers. Stalking stuff. Phone calls, texts etc. I recently sent her an invite for a gmail account as he sent her emails as well. She activated the account and only gave the address to 3 people, me, her brother and a close friend. Today she received an email and invite to chat from the ex. My question is: Does anyone know how it is possible that he could have obtained her address? She doesn't own a PC, only uses internet cafes and my PC to check mail. Any and all info would be gratefully appreciated as she is scared and Police can't do anything about it.
vystral
If he is stalking her, then he might have gotten it from the internet cafe. I don't know exactly how those places work, but he might have gotten ahold of the same computer she used and then dug up some history. You know, the old 'once you delete it, it is never REALLY deleted' thing.
espurious
Thanks vystral. I'll make sure she doesn't go there again.

Symok
That's really odd... The only way I can see that he would have been able to get her account would have been, as vystral said, to get on the same computer as she logged in to her account with. Then, that would only have worked if her username was saved in the login form, or (maybe) if she didn't log out properly. Yes, when you delete things they aren't really gone. BUT if you really delete it (from the recycle bin) the only way you can get it back is to use special software. When dealing with public access internet, you should ALWAYS be sure to log out of everything you do, and RESET the computer, if possible. There is software available that will restore the hard drives contents to an image when the comptuer is reset. I've never used an internet cafe, but I would assume that they would use something like this, to prevent spyware, etc from getting into their systems. I hope this helps out somwhat. Good luck! PS: You said that she's been getting phone calls and text messages as well. Have you considered going to the police about it?
TetsuoShima
It could also be a lot more simple: suppose you have an email janedoe@hotmail.com or something similar... If the guy really wants to contact her badly enough, it would be little trouble to send an email to all addresses resembling the one he knows, for example: janedoe@gmail.com possibly incuding some more numbers or some variation on the name. If the guy is an ex, he probably knows a thing or two about her, so then it's not hard at all to come up with possible names she could use on the net... Best way to avoid such things is to take names that have absolutely no meaning, like: jztyerdsmopi@gmail.com Now, if he can send a mail to such an address, then he's either mailing everybody... :cyclops: Or he indeed had access to a computer she previously used the name on... :)
MrDad
She activated the account and only gave the address to 3 people, me, her brother and a close friend. The answer is here. Give them each a different address and see which one her ex finds.
Symok
She activated the account and only gave the address to 3 people' date=' me, her brother and a close friend. The answer is here. Give them each a different address and see which one her ex finds. That could work, too. Its pretty bad when you can't trust your own sibblings, though. :(
Amnot Borg
Has the ex ever had access to a computer of your's, the brother's or the friend's? He could have accessed one of your accounts and gotten her address from there. Of course, if she keeps using the same name or type of name for email accounts, it could have been very easy to guess her address. Paranoia, gotta love it. remedyu
Also, you could get a few friends together and you can find this guy and beat the crap out of him. Give him a few months in the hospital and perhaps he will change his ways. Or hire some goons to do it. Best way is to get him in some alley, beat the crap outta him and of course make sure he doesn't know who did it. I bet ya he'll stop stalking her after that. Don't forget to warn him though. GhostShadow
uhmm, if she has trouble with a stalker, i can help :) I have ten friends and a crowbar that says he will leave her alone if you want me to..."talk" to him :) haha j/m. There are a lot of ways that you can get that kind of info, there is a program called 'brute focre' that can obtain that kinda info if you know how to use it. But I wouldnt expect that unless he is computer savey. First off, Report the stalking to the Cops/pigs then get a new account with another e-mail provider. (and between you and me, G-mail is a littel lame, imho) ;) good luck ta ya both
espurious
What can I say! I'm overwhelmed at the responses. Thanks everybody for the suggestions. I'll be keeping her clear of the internet cafe, signed her up with a completely unrelated email, contacted the police and we'll see what happens now. Thanks again for all the help. PS Amnotborg, it's only paranoia if they're NOT out to get you. :) PPS I do happen to have his return email address........but wouldn't want anyone to spam him or indeed get themselves into trouble from google over abuse, and wouldn't want my g/f any more upset. still if anyone wants it for information purposes...... Tenebrae
You should bear in mind that these days it's hilarious easy to get massive quantities of information on someone just by google stalking.
Symok
Only if they've put their information out there somewhere to be found in the first place. (ie: webpage, forum posts, etc)
espurious
I do Tenebrae, and I have Googled her myself, to no avail. she isn't anywhere and her new account wouldn't have posted anywhere, but thanks.
kyran
the alternative is of course one of the people that knew her email told the guy or he has access to their computer and got it from there

I was referring to "our" overkill suggestions being paranoid. He might have just gotten very lucky finding the information, unfortunately. ya know there is a rumor that if an email address was used to say, sign up for FREE gay porn, then it would get passed around to other distributors and webmasters very quickly. Just a rumor, I'd never do that to someone.:) but, if someone did, they should do it using a proxy to hide their personal IP address as it's really naughty and slightly illegal to pretend to be someone else. Learn more about PHP otr another language like that and you can send your own email bombs...or so I've heard... Check google or your favorite coding site. chrisjones
If it were me and this was happening to my GF, I would get her to agree to a meet up via email then go meet him myself for a little one to one chat ;-) ..thats just me though.

Especially now that hes started calling ME. Coincidentally, I am actually interested in free gay porn,so may have to google that, just to see what happens. EDIT - turns out there's a site called toastedspam.com where you can sign up for spam. Who knew!
