xtremeskiing
So as some of you know, I'm trying to watch trek in chronological order...you know what the hardest part is? Putting up with shatner's bad acting. Your the captain of the star ship, sit it your chair and enjoy it, you don't have to pose every time nemoy says something to you. Just wanted to say that, to see what comes of it.
Elessar
hahaha, i personally haven't seen TOS shows...But I had seen Generations and I really liked it, including Shatner's part...but that was 30 yrs later... I did however like him in the first film and 4th film, I did see those.
Relentless
I don't care about how much people think "Shatner Sucks", just saying it as a statement; fact or no fact at all... you don't deserve to make that statement xtremeskiinq. how would you like me to say that you suck? You most certainly don't however. [above in mention of the topic description] But I can understand not liking Shatner's acting but think of it; was it his acting? or did the Director want him to act a certain way? Well?? Just wanted to say that, to see what comes of it. At the risk of EXTREME HERESY I'll chime in and say that Shatner has never acted so well (or had so fitting a role) as he does as Denny Crane in Boston Legal (and briefly in The Practice last season). But, as Captain Kirk, he'll always have my loyalty, whether or not he's acting badly, full of himself, or a total pain on the set! My Kirk, right or wrong! xtremeskiing
I think it is shatner. He does it in more then star trek. But he is the worst on star trek. I really dont think he is that bad, afterall, I do watch it. He seems the worst in fight scenes, or any scene with spock. I just love it how family guy makes fun of this perfectly. maverick
perhaps that was simply accepted as acting back then. perhaps acting has evolved....along with the audience sounds like shatner is simply being himself and not takin things too seriously. i did like him in TJ Hooker though class act who cares if the acting is bad, peolpe just get angry cos something isnt the way they want it. stop havin expectations about what it should be. if you can than you can accept it for what it is, good , bad or indifferent and then you may find there are bits you like. trials and tribblations was a classic episode where you saw just how naff trek used to be back in the day but that made me laugh. the differences were cool and i have to admit i struggle to go back because i liked the way it made me feel back then and tng and others have given me a different standard. add 50years to tng and it may look shit, withthat dodgy bald bloke with the crap lookin chair. what star trek was then was a kind of dream and a fantasy not like now where it is also a set of morals and almost as way of life. if you look for thise things you'll hate it. so if you dont like shatner fine. if you dont like TOS, fine. but dont allow yourself to get disappointed because it isnt a repeat of what you have seen recently or because it isnt upto your standards. other alternatives involve kissin your own ass B)
Stranger
William Shatners overacting in Star Trek is as classic as the show itself. Even almost 40 years after TOS, you can entertain a lot of people by doing a good impersonation of Captain Kirk, as so many people have done over the years. I wish I could. ;) I can't stop myself from laughing most of the time when watching TOS. It's not really its age, I enjoy watching old movies and the same thing happens to me when watching the early TNG episodes. I just can't seem to see past the (poor) acting, sets, plots and dialogues. On the subject of overacting, does anyone think Avery Brooks took acting lessons from William Shatner? :D
VonHelton
At the end of the episode, when he, Spock & Bones are joking with each other, he's fine. .....That tells me it's the director, wanting him to over-act during fight scenes or scenes of importance. I guess the prevailing thought at the time was "If acting is good, more acting must be better!"......So the director would have him over-emphasize his emotions & movements. :stare:

Stranger
Overacting was not typical on TV and in movies in the sixties. The sixties is not an excuse for Shatners acting style, unless he was smoking pot at the time.

xtremeskiing
After all the insults, this has prooven to provoke much thought. What about that movie with tim allen playiing the captain of a TV star ship. they make allen so kirk like, its so funny, I love the scene when they say something about him along the lines of" "what is he rolling and doging from, there is no one here"

If his acting was all that bad then I guess, we can still apreciate the episodes. I'd rather watch them on anything but TV so I can fast forward the apparrent slow motion shirt rippings and all.
