But it was clear that it was not his real name. I think Patrick Troughten also used the alias once or twice.

It is never mentioned what his given name might be, when pressed he is just "The Doctor" nothing else. Other Timelords never call him anything else, except the one I think named Drax in The Armegedon Factor which instisted the doctors nickname in school was "feet" or something. I never could understand that.

StitchInTime is 100% correct.

Drax referred to the Doctor as Theta Sigma. Although not stated in Armageddon Factor, it's generally taken to be a nickname.

I'm stretching my memory here, but I think the 6th or 7th Doctor himself has said his real name is too hard/long for humans to pronounce.

And I have a sinking feeling someone in a New/Missing Adventure might ahve given him a name - either that or it's just me despairing of other things NA/MA authors have done to "Fill in the Gaps".

I hope we never find out his real name, it would take away some of the magic of the show. Keep the mystery alive. Almost like we never see Judge Dredd's face in the comic strip.

Isnt it funny also that in 'An Unearthly Child', the music Susan is listening to is referred to as 'John Smith and the....something something' could never remember off top of my head! Spooky!

Yeh thats right!

I'm racking my brains trying remember the doctor that said

"...my name is unpronouncible by humans...."

i keep thinking it was Tom Baker... but i remember everything as Tom Baker :)

I always thought it was in some 'hyper-frequency-tone' that we couldn't speak nor hear...

Plus, it seems to me I also recall the 4th Doctor saying his name was unpronouncible, but I can't remember for sure when.

1. Zoe was a troughton companion and it was that story (keep thinking the wheel...) that he saw a medical computer from John smith and son hence the name...

2. Theta Sigma is his nickname from school he says so clearly during Happiness Patrol while talking to the undercover guy.

3. his name being to complicated for humans was purely to sidetrack someone getting too inquisitive iirc.

apart from that even members of his own family (his cousins as they're called) call him Doctor check out Lungbarrow on the bbc website (apparently that one has become cannon because it explains how he gets given the mission to take the masters remains) however that story reveals he was in a previous life (the doctor being a genetic reincarnation) The Other, a mysterious figure in the history of gallifrey who helped both ras and omega in thier experiments giving them clues and hints guiding them.

I don't remember that. I think your remembering wrong, but if you remember what episode it was from let me know.
