Tenebrae
In ENT T'Pol or Archer says something about how uncommon intelligent life is - just a little bit before they go into a bar with about a dozen other species. I've really lost count of how many alien species Trek has encountered, never to be seen again. TNG was probably guiltiest of this closely followed by Voyager... DS9 and ENT (after season 2) didn't really see that many new species... but TNG and VOY were guilty of aliens of the week. One of the reasons that B5 was superior in my opinion, really. You had about a dozen alien races and that was it... Too many species kind of makes it a bit silly.
GorunNova
I can see understand it in Voyager (i.e. high warp in a straight line for weeks and months at a stretch = a LOT of new space uncovered), but yeah... There were a few too many sentient races in Star Trek.
TFMF
naa - i think it's great that we have so many different alien species in Star Trek - and i never thought that it was crowded.
GhostShadow
nope. I never thought that it was crowded. I thought that it was cool to se new alien life. That is why I love ST.
Steveo
I think new alien life was a plot device used by the Star Trek writers to avoid any real character development stories. One of many plot devices in Trek to avoid real continuing character development. Don't get me wrong, I love Star Trek, but come on, there were too many aliens. Tablet
well In TOS the writers used all the different alien species to represent the problems with our society at the time, e.g. racism, sexism, teenage rebelion and so forth

Tablet
its a shame you only get to see the minor races once, mybe twice for an extra - i liked how voyager developed some of the minor races, like the videans, malon, and the hirogen well i suppose voyager needed some baddies too. Tenebrae
I agree that in Voyager it actually made sense they'd see a fair few, after all they had 75,000 light years. Still - and yes, it's fiction - but as BSG points out, the galaxy isn't a very hospitable place. The number of alien species is hilarious... although I suppose we have the progenitors and preservers to thank for all the species... and all of them being bipedal, oxygen speaking humanoids. Tablet
in voy season 5 ep nothing human we get to see one of the only non humanoid species the only others i can think of are the trill symbiants (forgive the spelling) and the Sheliak, maybe someone should start a thread to discuss non-humanoid aliens? Tenebrae
Sheliak were really a LOT like the... oh what are they called... they appeared in ENT and TOS... it'll come to me... Eh, I got nothing... but let's face it, you can count the number of non-humanoids on one hand. Species 1234 were one.
Symok
Nonhumanoid species in Star Trek that I can recall/have been mentioned: Founders Horta Trill symbiote (Actually, there were two variations on this, the TNG version and the DS9 version) Sheliak that black tar guy who killed Tasha (Ok, not really a "species", but still nonhumanoid) Those aliens from another galaxy in TOS ep "Catspaw" The aliens in VOY ep "Good Sheppard" (I think they were sentient... Its been a while since I watched the ep so I can't recall 100%) The aliens from Voyager that another starfleet crew was using for fuel Those insectoids from Voyager Some of the Xinid (had to look them up on Wikipedia, I stopped watching ENT before they were introduced) Then, of course, there's all the noncorporeal life forms that have been encountered. Organians, Trelane, Q, etc (Some of these I found/was reminded of while looking through Wiki and the encyclopedia)

GlaC
Esspecially the stupid alienlife in the first seasons of TNG and almost every alien of TOS except for the main ones, maybe be deleted from history...
GlaC
Funny also btw, how you always see a lot of intelligent lifeforms, but barely ever animals or such...
TFMF
Funny also btw' date=' how you always see a lot of intelligent lifeforms, but barely ever animals or such...[/quote'] ah yes - never thought about that. I'd imagine creating animals would cost more money and time which isn't avaialble is one of the things they seem to forget...

cbosdell
Some of the Xinid (had to look them up on Wikipedia, I stopped watching ENT before they were introduced) Shame. You missed the best two seasons of trek then. Go watch it now.
Tenebrae
Species 1234 - I was being facetious, that's what I call 8472 when I can't remember what it's called. Other variations would be 0800. It's worth noting that the Founders and Q spent the vast majority of their time in humanoid form... and the time we see 8472 for the 3rd time? Was it third? Anyway, they were human then. Apparently, the Borg were going to be insectoid but they realised that would just be too expensive.
