I guess if this movie make the box they probably continue a related series.

An oh, whatever that may be, some new Trek will be more than good. i'm not saying i'm OK for "anything" but let's face it: we want Star Trek... more and more.

WHY WHY WHY? I mean - at first I was stoked to hear the news that more trek was coming? But SPOCK & KIRK again...

Bloody Starfleet Academy and with Spock & Kirk at that... It's like you get 2 crap ideas for the price of one 1) an installment of Star Trek based on the Academy and 2) Reviving TOS in some desperate notion that it'll be worth a few more dollars yet.

What a godawful idea... A movie that can be to TOS Star Trek, what Muppet Babies what to the Muppets.

I'm getting to wonder whether there might be some seriously influential media folk who are ACTUALLY DELIBERATELY trying to frel up the Star Trek franchise for good.

Hmm... that's a good point, I think in terms of popularity and critical acclaim a film that did poorly at the box office and got hammered by critics could possibly be a way for Trek to go away for a long time. If you managed to alienate enough fans - and let's face it, there are plenty of ways to angry up the fans... for example getting that waste of space that played Anakin as Kirk or something.

I actually had a vision of this being some "hilarious" teen comedy with Kirk and Spock as a couple of frat boys getting up to "side-splitting" antics... Yeah, not a great image. I never get the attraction of Academy - to boldly go to class on time! Unless you're the slavering fanboy type who so horny for barely legal alien co-eds zero-g lesbian volleyball tournament.

Actually, that may just be the idea that saves this film.

BREAKING NEWS: J.J. Abrams to Produce/Direct "Trek XI"

J.J. Abrams, producer of hit shows Lost and Alias, as well as director of the upcoming Paramount film "Mission: Impossible III," is slated to produce and direct the next Star Trek feature, .... He will be writing the script with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who penned "M:i:III."

Great... so it will be another action movie pretending to be science fiction ... hmmm...

hmm...well this sounds cool - i only hope it's true

although i don't like how they keep going back - would be better if it were post-nemesis

Yeah! Did they forget that they went backwards with ENT and it blew up in their faces! I heard that ENT was set when it was because alot of Trek fans were sick of each series going further in to the future or they wanted to bridge the gap between now and TOS. So I guess its all their fault.

**FANBOY DREAM ALERT**

If they want to reinvigorate the franchise, and there are still principle actors alive from every series, they should make a epic, Lord Of The Rings-style trilogy filmed at once that includes elements from each series in a wider story arc. It could also be used to set up a future series as well. It could span timelines (an original thought for Star trek, no?) or whatever. By doing a trilogy they would be able to have enough action and space battles, but keep the human element that is is important to Genes vision. This would be able to bring in new fans, be grounded in the past, relevent to our present lives, as well as point a way to the future.

Never happen, and even if it did, something would screw it up (actors wanting more screen time etc) but a aging fanboy can dream.

That would be a good way of setting up a new series, getting the hype going and so on... but I'd agree with the assessment it's only a dream.

I think it would be hard to incorporate elements from ALL series and if you start getting into spanning timelines - which sounds a lot like All Good Things - it's likely that it would start to get unfeasibly complicated. I think if you just had a nice solid narrative, a crew have to go on a mission to save the universe (again) or something and just string that out for three films before someone tosses the damned ring in the volcano. ;)

Star Trek could use a bit of what happened to Dr Who, axed for 16 years (not including the 1996 movie) and then brought back to life by someone who actually 'cares' about the show and be more popular than it ever was! Hope that happens one day!

I'm going to have to agree that a longer break is needed.

I'm going to keep saying the same thing, because I'm right, and that is people accepting lower quality because they'll take any Trek at all played a large part in putting the frnachise where it is today.

Yes, yes you're right of course but what about old meats like me? We need sumfin, at least decent sumfin cos i don't wanna be 50 or more when next Trek takes off!!! I'll give my vote to new movie with hope it comes 60% worthy... :cyclops:

Actually, thats how the origianl Trek series became a motion picture and a Next generation series. Books and such have kept Trek alive before. However, I dont feel that a longer break is needed IF the person taking the helm truly loves Trek. And the execs allow them to make a film/series that is good, and not a cookiecutter version of what they think males between the ages of 16 and 24 will watch. (No offense to those that fit into that age range!)

Books' date=' Audio & fan-based material kept Dr Who alive, isnt there anything like that in the Trek Universe? I like Trek but Im not the greatest fan, is why I ask![/quote']

Why is it that impossible? I mean, you figure they want to continue the franchise, so they will be making 3 movies anyway. this would be less expensive and they would be able to tell a grander, cohesive story. They dont have to use every character from Trek, or every setting. I just mean some adventure that brings a bunch of them together. Heck, Back To The Future did two movies at the same time!

I dont think it will happen because Trek is controlled by spineless cowards and it now lacks Gene's vision. There seems to be nobody who loves Genes original vision at the helm. All they care about is test audience reaction. Audiences responded to a vision of the future that was hopeful, yet challenging.

Corperations respond to an investment that guarantees profit with minimal gambling.

Dont get me wrong, it's not gonna happen, at least for now. However I do hope that JJ Abrams loves Trek and fights for it. That would be a win for everyone.

I think its like too impossible to shoot a trilogy spanning that far :o
