Tenebrae
Let's not forget that the Federation actually had something close to working transwarp over a century earlier on the Excelsior, Scotty's gravitational field just stopped it from working. There's a good what if - what if Scotty hadn't broken the trasnwarp drive?
hayden
i actually have not watched much of TOS, so please fill me in
Tenebrae
I'm not talking TOS, I'm talking Star Trek III: Search For Spock. They Scotty sabotages it or something like that and the next time the ship is seen, it's just got a normal warp drive.
hayden
ohhhhhhh.. now its all clear haha.. then why isnt developed more in future episodes.. strange. that is a good what if thought. voyages trip would not have been anywhere near as long and by that time you would expect that they would have some sort of presence in the delta quadrant dont you think?? TFMF
Let's not forget that the Federation actually had something close to working transwarp over a century earlier on the Excelsior, Scotty's gravitational field just stopped it from working. There's a good what if - what if Scotty hadn't broken the trasnwarp drive? Well my idea is that if they had managed to get transwarp working - that perhaps the Federation might not have survived battles like Wolf 359 - because - if they did get it working - they would have focused a lot more on science and exploration - and so the Federation might not have been ready for the Borg perhaps Scotty breaking the transwarp drive was a blessing in disguise... Tenebrae
A lot of the time though, things with peaceful applications can be weaponised... and it's debatable as to whether the breaking of transwarp resulted in more weapons research anyway. OR MAYBE SCOTTY WAS WORKING FOR SECTION 31. Harry Kim was on a mission from 31 too. To strike out with as many alien lifeforms as possible. He was... THE ANTI-KIRK. TFMF
Yeah i suppose - it could benifit them as well - they could meet new species get new technology - but it would be dangerous - depends how far the Federation would be willing to travel
Tenebrae
[generic ripping on Janeway] I personally prefered the Vulcan strategy as demonstrated in ENT... which basically seemed to be going around and finding ways to tick off humans. I guess it's hard to fill in the seven years between sex.

Steveo
Just before we go into that, one last point about Transwarp and Wolf-359. With trans-warp drive, calling up a bigger fleet and getting re-enforcements would perhaps have been easier. If the Vulcans hadn't detected the flight? The warp drive would, I think, have been used as a weapon. Anti-matter bombs, spacecraft etcetera. I think humanity would wipe itself out.
TFMF
Oh yeah i can see the advantage of Transwarp with in situations like Wolf 359 - but still - it may not have helped - the larger the fleet at wolf 359 - the more there is to destoy and assimilate - as it didn't seem to matter how many ships they had But didn't cocran use the warp flight as a way to unite his people? might have worked had the Vulcans not joined in the fun :)
Tenebrae
They never elaborate on how humanity unites - just that it happens magically and it's because of FTL travel. It's a bit of a commentary on Roddenbury's over-hyped abilities.
Gregpicard
I wish they had made an episode after Voyager returned home. It would have been interesting to see how the crew were greeted by family and friends, etc. Also would have interesting to see what happened to various members of the crew after, but alas it shall never be known *sigh* :(

hayden
if the vulcans didnt notice cochran anything could have happened to earth. they could of started searching through space for civilisations and encountered the romulans are formed an alliance with them, or with some other nasty bunch of people.
