vystral
What we know: Europa is covered in ice. Titan's chemical seas are lined with an organic solution. Could life exist beneath the frozen chasms of Europa?
psheldrake1
From what I've learned in my years is that, anything is possible.
Oma
Europa: I don't know - I don't think so - but it's possible. There's not a whole lot of energy in the sunlight that far out. of course, a life form doesn't have to have as high a meabolism as what we can find on earth, but the actual initiation of life might just be a bottleneck. Let's assume that ol' theory of amino-acids generated from lightening in condensed ponds on the beach primordial earth beach. This soupe then at some point (somehow) spontatenously assembled amino-acids into some kind of self-replicating protein (early life, perhaps). If we have no weather (lightning, + condencing on a beach)) to turn : (atoms-> molecoules -> amino-acids) , then we can't have the last step (life) If the sunlight can result in the same process as lightning, then will it happen often enough to get a high enough concentration of amino acids for anything to occur? (I mean, before they degrade again...) Does anyone now if Europa has an atmosphere and what it consists of?

vystral
Europa's ionosphere has a maximum density of 10,000 electrons per cubic centimeter, which is significantly lower than the average density of 20,000 to 250,000 electrons per cubic centimeter found in Jupiter's ionosphere. This indicates that Europa's ionosphere is tenuous; nonetheless, it is strong enough for scientists to infer the presence of an atmosphere. Scientists believe Europa's "atmosphere" consists at least in part of good 'ol oxygen.

The poor chinese who landed on Europa to refuel their water (for hydrogen production) ended up being overgrown by a phototropic (light-seeking) plant-form... here be monsters! vystral
Awesome book & movie. I have "2001: A Space Odyssey" (Stanley Kubrick) on DVD and a print of an original poster from the movie.
maverick
Awesome book & movie. I have "2001: A Space Odyssey" (Stanley Kubrick) on DVD and a print of an original poster from the movie. the movie was cool. i spent the first half hour wondering what the hell wasgoin on, the next having a quiet chortle about the decor and the last bit bein utterlypissed off by the ending. WTF? however, and astounding movie. ithought partsof it were beatifully artistic. a great achievement, with a crappy ending. all four of us in the house sat gobsmacked thinkin somethin was gonna happen and

VonHelton
EUROPA Europa was a Phoenician princess abducted to Crete by Zeus, who had assumed the form of a white bull, and by him the mother of Minos. Discovered by Galileo and Marius in 1610. Europa and Io are somewhat similar in bulk composition to the terrestrial planets: primarily composed of silicate rock. Unlike Io, however, Europa has a thin outer layer of ice. Recent data from Galileo indicate that Europa has a layered internal structure perhaps with a small metallic core. Facinating......."Silicate Rock". Raw silicone? As in what's needed to make computer chips? Get the mining equipment ready!! :D Damn.....Forgot the link! http://www.nineplanets.org/europa.html

VonHelton
Awesome' date=' must have more computers; we can neverhave enough![/quote'] "Silicate Rock" may have nothing to do with silicone, but it sure sounds like it does, doesn't it? :)
