that's good to know,

i looked on the star trek website and found this:

According to Variety, the proposed story will focus on the early days of James T. Kirk and Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and their first mission in space.

However it goes on to say that Abrams doesn't agree.

And that here is the link: Here

They need to focus on the FUTURE not the PAST! Every time they go backweards in the story line they screw up the timeline!!!

Set the new movie...let's see...100 to 300 years after Voyager got home?

Yes - this was the problem i had with Enterprise - and although it was a good series the time it was set in didn't really remind me of Star Trek

i'd like it if it was set not too far ahead of the Nemesis incident

I agree. Star Trek needs to move forward. Not only in time, but also in terms of space exploration. Personally, I'm tired of seeing the Federation stranded in our little corner of the Milky Way Galaxy.

Why not introduce new technologies to the Federation ships (such as transwarp conduits etc.), which would allow the Federation to explore all our galaxy and maybe a few others?

Surely, one of the reasons Star Trek has lost its appeal is the technology issue. Nobody is amazed to see a computer or a communicator anymore because we already have those things now. If Star Trek wants to recapture people's imagination, it needs to come up with new stuff.

Because, old chap... what could be more boring that technology that could do everything?

The whole point of ENT was to combat the creep of technological omnipotence.

I wish I could think Trek could handle super tech... but it can't. If Star Trek wants to capture people's imaginations it needs to be good, not go "oh, let's add more tech and go to a whole new dimension/galaxy/universe/your mother". At the end of the day, going further into the future, adding more tech, going to a galaxy far far away... they're all just ways of avoiding good writing.

I'd be willing to bet that gatefan also had improved scripts in mind. It's a given so it's not even necessary to mention it anymore (IMHO). The whole Star Trek "package" needs to be re-examined. Everything mentioned above and more. I hate to even think it but...maybe the franchise has simply run out of steam?

That is why everyone has said they needed a break because when Enterprise fell over no one had a good idea where to proceed.

A good new movie could revitalise the franchise or ruin it.

Personally I think it is hard to go back and making a new Kirk and Spock movie probably wouldn't work.

We might see something similar with the new Superman Returns movie, I don't know how well that will work.

If you go forward you have to work out some direction the show would go. ie a main plot line even though TNG and TOS didn't do this they had an evolving plot line so when in Generations Data implanted the emo chip TNG viewers what was happening.

Enterprises best episodes were the ones which focused on building the ideals of the federation and the Prime directive which should have be the main direction of the series.

Haha. You know what might be good (and prolly needed) a movie to explain all the timeline screw-ups! Set far in the future and featuring the new cast of "Star Trek: Department of Temporal Investigations".

Well personally, I reckon that Enterprise was a lost opportunity. It could have been true sci fi. You see, Star Trek is set in this almost utopian future, with the federation and all its values, no more capitalism, no more racism, no more poverty, everybody working for the common good, and all that jazz. But at this time in world history, which is pretty bleak when you get down to it, we need more than ever to be able to connect the dots and draw the line from this crappy present, to that way cool future. Enterprise could have done that, you know - given some hope.

Instead we got that damn Xindi arc.

Anyhow, getting back on topic, I REALLY hope we can take this news to mean it wont be Kirk & Spock movie. The problem is, look at the mans language...

People learned that I was producing a Star Trek film' date=' that I had an option to direct it, they hear rumours of what the thing was going to be and ran with a story that is not entirely accurate

Not ENTIRELY? That means that the rumors were therefore partially accurate, right?

yea enterprise really screwed the timeline... if i remember rightly wasnt it kirk who made first contact with the romulans and klingons? or did i miss something there? (also if i remember rightly it was kirk who gave the klingons cloaking technology by stealing it from a romulan ship... or was it the other way around... i remember reading something about that in my friends omnipedia...)

There are a few threads on forum about the new Star trek film........I think the new film should follow on from the end of Voyager and show how the Borg technology is being integrated into the Federation ships. Interaction between the Voyager crew and Picards Enterprise would be welcome and I would also like to see the Romulans try and steal the tecnhnology for themselves using inflitrators on Earth and in Star Fleet command.......they may even steal Voyager from space dock......which would make an awesome film sequence.

Amb Spock would return in this film in a sequence which sees the rise a military dictatorship on Romulas after failed negotiations. It is when the the spys strike on earth that the weak government on Romulas is overthrown. Picard and Janeway must rescue spock and recover Voyager before an entire fleet of Romulan war birds are fitted with the new technology with the aim of destroying the Federation.

Now go away and make it........never mind all this time travel malarky.

I remember many years ago Paramount used to complain about the incredible number of fan scripts they used to recieve in the post.........I bet they wished they hadnt binned so many now!

Agreed!

I just reckon that the franchise needs is to keep reminding itself that Star Trek is about so much more than starship battles and space opera. Gene Roddenberry created the show with one eye on the times he lived in; the cold war, the civil rights movement and the social changes of the 60's. I mean - look at the Pilot, he wanted a woman as first officer and it was only the usual studio executive types that disbarred him from doing that in the show proper.

I think that those granted the privelege to steer Star Trek into the future need to remember that precedent, even if like Gene in that instance, they don't win every battle. Why shouldn't Star Trek's semi-utopian future be a place with gay parents for example? Or even any homosexuals for that matter. It was by speaking to its time and by subtly weaving into its fantasies, the difference between where we can be and where we're at, that Star Trek became great - TOS & TNG alike.

It worries me Abram's hasnt seen Nemesis! Its like turning up for a job interview and then telling the employer you know nothing about the his/her company!

The Kirk Spock relationship is an award winning formula. There is no need to mess with that........someone slap that man! I think the majority of fans of the original series were won over by TNG so theres no real need to go back that far in the timeline to re-aquire the fan base. All the films are in chronological order so why make one that isnt?

Lets face it we still dont really know what happened to Picard or any of the others in the last film? We dont know what happened to the Voyager crew........I dont agree that there is no scope for another film in the 24th Century.
