Wazer
from that episode ( Who Mourn's for Morn) I think they had some sort of filler inside the bricks gold dust or something with a shell. I'm not sure why they were so brittle though. Maybe it is something to do with being gold pressed anyway they were obviously fakes so it is hard to tell what they are really supposed to be like. Tenebrae
Mr. Dad has already speculated they crumbled as some part of a security measure - which makes sense. But it does seem that latinum is more of a Ferengi obsession than anything... while there are obvious benefits to a monetary economy, it seems that replicators make the barter of goods and services - as seen in Voyager - is a great deal more common. Which makes sense given the lack of a universal currency.
Guest c4evap
FYI: Latinum --> From Memory Alpha, the free Star Trek reference. Nature decays, but latinum lasts forever. -Ferengi Rules of Acquisition Latinum is a rare silver liquid used as currency by the Ferengi Alliance and many other worlds. It cannot be replicated. For ease of transaction, latinum is usually suspended within gold to produce gold-pressed latinum. (DS9: "Who Mourns for Morn?") Denominations of gold-pressed latinum, in order of increasing value, include the slip, the strip, the bar and the brick. Note: DS9: "Who Mourns for Morn?" suggests that gold is worthless, but this claim is usually disregarded. c4 B)
