VonHelton
Navy plans to sink America Explosive tests will send aircraft carrier to bottom of Atlantic WASHINGTON - The Navy plans to send the retired carrier USS America to the bottom of the Atlantic in explosive tests this spring, an end that is difficult to swallow for some who served on board. VonHelton
Guess the 'data' the US needs is more information on how to destroy. :cyclops: Eeeek This is wrong, on so many levels........ First, it's being used for target practice. Had it been another name, I might not have cared, but it's name is America! ....It sounds like we're disrespectful to ourselves! Would Britain sink the "HMS London"? or "HMS United Kingdom"? Would Germany sink the "Graf Deutschland"? Second, this ship is still sea-worthy. A Hospital Ship of this size would be a big help, all over the world! Or, perhaps deep sea exploration! I bet the hangar bays could hold several deep sea submarines! Or perhaps a science vessel, testing alternate forms of fuel, like solar, Ion, Fusion, or even wind power! Third, there is enough metal on this ship to make plenty of stuff with......A spaceship, the Moon Colony or Mars Colony, space rocketry, all kinds of uses! ......Instead, we're gonna let it rust at the bottom of the ocean, after hitting it with all kinds of weapons. What a waste! :(
MindTrick
This is wrong, on so many levels........ Nobody has ever accused the american military, better yet, the guys in command of the military of being bright..... If the ship is truly still sea worthy, at the very least it should be stripped of all weapons tech, and sold to another country that could make use of an old military ship, say Canada :)
MarkusSVK
Not a bad idea a science\hospital\research\rescue vesel. Quite usefull in disaster regions. Expensive to maintain. I'm not an American, but this sounds like a quite dishonorable end for a ship of this name. Or from the otherside: serving to the end!

quosego
Maybe we should make a fund to buy it..... then we have a site a tracker and a ship..... :cyclops: awesome, we could rename it and put a few warp nacelles at both sides and it would be spaceworthy..... i'm putting in 5 euro's

What do you think? Replace the bulkheads with air-tight compartments, seal up the rear & add some huge Ion Engines, like Battlestar Galactica? ......See, I've been thinking about this! ;)
quosego
Or just good ol Enterprise :D still i think getting that enormous thing in to space might be a problem.... i guess gas propelled cows wouldn't do the trick :p and how expensive would it be..... No, I think gas propelled cows are out of the question.........LOL! However, the ship could be cut into sections that could be reattached in space later. A "Space Elevator" could be built to literally lift the parts into space, saving fossil fuels. (Don't laugh......The Space Elevator is being considered as a real possibility!!) If this "lift" can handle the weight, we could put a section at a time on it. :cyclops:
VonHelton
The Space Elevator ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO -- Make way for the ultimate high-rise project: the space elevator. Long viewed as science fiction "imagineering", researchers are gathering momentum in their pursuit to propel this uplifting concept into actuality. Still, the mental picture needed to grasp the elevator to space idea…well, you can't be weak of mind. Forget the roar of rocketry and those bone jarring liftoffs, the elevator would be a smooth 62,000-mile (100,000-kilometer) ride up a long cable. Payloads can shimmy up the Earth-to-space cable, experiencing no large launch forces, slowly climbing from one atmosphere to a vacuum. Engineer101
i bet the guys that are gonna sink the USS America probably say "It will make a good artifical reef" and second the space elavator is impossible. the elevator has to propel high enough into space to get pass the atmosphere. and wat will happen to the poor test subjects err people in the elevator. shouldnt we waste this precious resources on like other things like artificial gravity, a better ship design, new miltary weapons. new miltary armor at least. oh this is nice http://www.military.com/soldiertech/0,14632,Soldiertech_Warrior,,00.html 2nd picture down. the guy in the black armor (armor looks cooler then the one next to it)
vystral
If we're going to sink it, let's rename it. How's about something like the USS Chile? What has Chile ever done good besides have a cool name?

Engineer101
ooo maybe they could be sinking cause of this "Did you know that no American aircraft carrier has been sunk in over 50 years?" so the miltary is gonna see wat happens on that
