Star Trek Fans and Star Wars Fans

Ok.. .this ISNT a Trek vs. Star Wars topic.

I read in a book where someone made the observation that hardcore Star Trek fans generally arent big Star Wars fans and vice versa. What do you all think?

As a big Star Trek fan, I do notice that (while I like them) Im not totally all about Star Wars.

heh, I don't know, but I can't see myself walking around in a jedi outfit (or as a wookie or stormtrooper) at a convention, but I would by a Starfleet uniform and parade in that at a convention (though not as a klingon either).

I like both too btw, I read a lot of Star Wars books and also Star Trek books. In the end though Star Wars is all about the Jedi (= extrodinary people) and their quest for a peacefull galaxy, while Star Trek is more about normal beings striving for peace and prosperity. That makes me lean a lot more towards Star Trek.

As for ignoring or arguing amongst each other, that only normal, people who have different ideas argue. :D

The more different the ideas, the harsher the arguements. :)

I'd deffinetly agree with this. I love Star Trek but Star Wars is just a few movies to me. They're nice to watch once in a while but there's nothing compelling me to go out and buy and murchandise or see the Clone Wars series or anything like that. Star Trek on the other hand - i have loads of DVD's and even loads on VHS and have even picked up a few collectors items along the way.

Although i will admit that Star Wars beats Star Trek in some ways.... Knights of the Old Republic is just gold ;)

I like both - though, neither of them enjoy particularly high standing with me at the moment.

There is a lot more epic stuff in Star Wars... fate of the galaxy hanging in the balance, good vs. evil and so on. Trek is on a smaller scale and... well, it's just a bit more silly - Han and Chewie never ran into

Anyway, if you want to see the true conflict between Trek and Wars, go watch Undergrads.

it depends on my mood mostly, I like ST more than SW but I do enjoy them both... when I was younger, Trek was the only thing on my mind but as I grew older and learned that ST was novelized, I read them, and the comic versions, along came SW and the same thing happened, novels and comics were there for me to enjoy... so I did! ...from there, I branched out into a LOT more and varied types of scifi... my roots are mostly ST but I grew into other things... I take my technobabble where I can find it these days! ;)

Oh yes i probably should have mentioned - i only started watching Star Trek half way through Voyager so i had already seen episodes 4-6 of Star wars. After watching Voyager i quickly became a trekkie rather than a.....whatever Star Wars fans are called :D

a lot of the members here, including niteshdw, probably starting watching Trek either from reruns of ST:TOS or the newer series, and the Star Wars movies are family classics popping up on television, so I'm not surprised that a lot of the younger fans have mixed views... I'm just glad someone in Hollywood made something that inspired so many of us to lead better lives than we might have without it... I love my science fiction programming.  ;D

I agree alot with you. I watch Star Wars and enjoy them, but as you said, they are "just a few movies", and I dont see myself getting as geeky about them as I do Star Trek.

Another thing is that there are 27 seasons of Star Trek in comparison the the 6 SW movies.. so i suppose its easier to be excited about something that theres so much more of.

i rem watching the first ep of TNG.. i must have been 9 or something....

anywho.... starwars are good moives (original),,, & the new ones just spoiled it ...

man i was upset with the last one... i wanted to see vader kick some a$$ !!!!!

but thats it theyre just movies, though inspiring as they are you can't beat the long hour of brain

washing ST can do to you.. lol..... plus the fact that for every week of seven years at a time you tuned into watch it.....

whereas you watch the movie one & your done.... though its become a tradition to watch them over the seasonal ho.s.. even that is in-danger of fading....

but the final question is what do you wanna a been????

an officer or a rebel???  ;)

well i know what comes by the bucketfull.

i must admit with star wars the newer trilogy is not as good as the original 4,5 & 6 and it is a real shame that lucus wont be doing the final 3 parts but in context of the time star wars made it set many groundbreaking standards in special effects and space combat scenes, lets face it if it wasnt for the vision of lucus and co using cutting edge special effects back in 1977 then st tng would be like St tos with new actors( not that that would be a bad thing imo)

Indeed, oh what irony especially as Star Wars was Lucas' answer to Star Trek in the first place.

I like both for different reasons.

Star Wars just beats it out because nothing feels better than swinging a lightsaber at enemy troops in Battlefront 2. Jedis are fun to play (and now I wanna go play Battlefront 2 again).

The problem with Star Wars was... George Lucas literally stole the entire plot of the first film from "The Fortress"... so you have Jedi as Samurai and... all those other parallels I can't remember. Then you had Empire Strikes Back which was done by someone different and had a far darker tone... and naturally, Return of the Jedi... which was rubbish.

And then 20 years later, Lucas waltzes back in and decides he's ready to direct - as if he ever could - after not having done anything in the interim... and not actually having even written the scripts for the films... despite having had 20 years to do it and then he goes "Oh! They're kids films!" Yeah... all the wholesome themes in the Star Wars films, slavery, incest, negligent parents, decapitation... limbs chopped off, torture and misuse of furries. Someone kick Lucas in the nuts for me, eh? Here's a few bits he left out from the original trilogy.

To me Star Wars seemed like a movie with a lot of high profile actors but not much acting. Star Trek is a lot more personal and seems more realistic. It deals with peoples lives and problems, at times episodes are very corny and kind of silly, but it seems to connect with you on a personal level. Star Trek is more emotional and it deals with a lot more than just space voyages.

I don't know if that makes much sense, but that's what I personally think. I never liked Star Wars because it seemed very dry and boring.

Ithink it's mainly because we got to know the characters on Star Trek better. 7 seasons of Voyager for example - at first it was just a bunch of people put together on a ship. But somewhere in season 2 or 3 they became a family and actually worked well together. In Star Wars it's mainly about telling the story rather than much else.
