Are the Startrek-TV series big business ( $)? or only a nice SF-TV serie ?

I just watched an interview with Joss Whedon, where he mentions that Buffy the Vampire Slayer had about 6 million viewers and was boycotted by all fast-food advertisers. That's not so far from Enterprise ratings ...

UPN has made a STUPID decision. What other shows do they have that come close to the number of viewers AND have potential DVD sales well into the future?

Then I noticed that according to Nielsen, House, MD was the number 5 rated show last week. Truly pathetic. Americans don't deserve Star Trek. House basically has a single script with a few details switched from week to weak. It is a weak show with a cute premise, but ultimately quite boring.

Perhaps America DESERVES Bush, American Idol, Fear Factor, and CSI. Don't cast pearls before swine ... we haven't evolved enough as a culture to be worthy of Star Trek! Which is painful for those of us who love and appreciate it in its various forms. (To say nothing of the rest of the world who have evolved beyond us in many ways!)

Wise and thoughtful reply/statement, Elderbear...

if only a few more of your (and elsewhere as well) population would understand that and be able to harness such thinking; the world would be a FAR better place, for everyone - although it's not too late for good change, as I've said, more and more people are becoming more aware, if (so far) ever so slightly, but still the process is at work.... ;)

And I have to agree, Buffy is very good, Joss Whedon did a GREAT job with that show.

Star Trek is big business, especially if you guys consider the market AROUND Startrek such as cloaths, music, movies, DVD-bundles, episode-bundles, markets, seminars, events, all the toys and other small stuff that goes around - what do you think built up the fortunes of Lucas Arts and George Lucas?

NEVER underestimate the power of the small "side" things...actually, as sad is it may be, today most markets actually live of the "side-things", for an instance;

Gasstations - supposed to sell gas (or petrol if you're British) but now adays, Gas isn't worth jack and it's only there to DRAW customers - like suger for flies.. it's actually all SIDE things that MAKE the TRUE biz such as a variety of assorted mech/car stuff - screws, equipment, oils, polishes, food/beverages and so on.

Musicstores started off selling GEAR - guitars, pianos, amplifiers etc. but nowadays it's NOT the gear that makes it go around, it's again...the S I D E stuff like guitarpicks, straps, cables, strings and practially whatever support gear/stuff/thingie you can imagine for that biz.

Sad..but unfortunatly true.

Same with our beloved art industry - in this movies/tv-shows.

The TV shows are made to DRAW attention and commercial, not GOOD TV...Good and Gr8 TV is SECONDARY or even on a lower level - which could be something to stir up strong emotions by every right!

The biggest problem with America in general is that it's the leading and enforcing forefront of an ever so capitilized world where even society itself becomes a product of it self - everything becomes a subject for sale, market and commercial.

That is why people's uprising against industry vampires (Music / entertainment industry) is GOOD because it shows them that people won't take it any more - hopefully these minor uprisings will grow stronger and stir up and break that marketthinking - and therin also lies the problem; the lack of LONGTERM (which means atleast 5-10 years and/or beyond) thinking and the lack of social humanism as its foundation.

Actually REAL longterm makes me think of a statement Brian Klemmer had in his book "If how-to's were enough, we'd all be skinny, rich and happy" where his old mentor ...Tom I think, used to talk about 100 years and beyond...that's REAL longterm thinking.

I could go on forever about this, but I'm not going to pursue this issue any further, here...however as I stated in a different topic, I am taking action, and not simply expressing opinions...I'm writing this here, and I'm talking to people where I am in "real life" and as well taking other forms of action (I usually say that if someone doesn't care to take action in some form they really don't deserve the right to complain, because they aren't doing anything about nothing anyway...)...

Though I'd like to point out that I'm very happy with the people I've "seen" around here for one thing.

There IS H O P E, afterall (HOPE=helping other people evolve ? :D)

Never said that anyone would have to be a die-hard fanatic just because a lot of things centered around a main "object" exists.

It was simply a statement to further show "how" businesses works and just how much business even our most beloved and sacred things are - unfortunately.

Enterprise is Big Business. If it was for the love of the Trek it would continue. Not come to a halt when you can't squeeze anymore money out of it.

Make that: "Not come to a halt when you can't squeeze enough more money out of it."

With proper marketing, with DVDs, and yes, even the radical idea of UPN releasing AVI files for d/l (I'd keep them around 80-100 MB/episode) and charging a fee, to say nothing of licensed merchandise, you KNOW that they're making a handsome profit.

I suspect that they want to re-brand themselves, and think that they can make more w/o new Treks than with. Ho hum. I think I'll not watch UPN anymore!

Which is again something to start worrying about and to create a spur of "wanting to take action against*"

Why do you suppose they did?? :D

Didn't like the concept of their industry being dissed - decided not to support it. Just like I'm deciding not to support UPN (for cancelling Enterprise) or Fox (for lots of reasons, one of which was the offensive piece they aired about Trekkers & the $3M pledge to TrekUnited!).
