elderbear
We are a primal people. Our brains contain very primitive structures that strongly influence our behaviors. We also have "higher" brain power, including the ability to regulate the limbic system and other primitive parts of the brain. We are primal - that is not the question. Rather, to what extent will we be enslaved to the primal, and to what extent will we be guided by the self-reflective, learning, enlightened parts of ourselves? This growth doesn't mean abandoning the primal - if anything, it means getting to know it better, so we are less subject to being hijacked and manipulated. ZaphodiLe
It is a possible future. The only thing needed is to put the right people in charge, perhaps a step in the right direction would be *cough* *cough* to get rid of Bush...
Soulreaper
Someone "getting rid of" Bush or whoever...well it only takes ONE man (or woman) to change the world :D But the essence of change is EVOLUTION not revolution
vystral
One man or woman cannot change the world alone. Mankind has no hope in the hands of the republicans...
Soulreaper
Of course one person is enough - where's your imagination? However the more participients the faster and better!
str82u
I don't know about the future of humanity, I have an opinion yes, but no theory (is that possible?) What I mean is, How do we know what would happen if our planet were still in shock from a huge devasting (Third World) War, then a scientifc/mechanical breakthrough making it possible to explore the galaxy attracted an intelligent ALIEN species, who decided to make thier presence known and become buddies. What would you think? Pettiness is powerful and all consuming, like alcoholism or other addictions, would people give that up and become one species instead of several races of the same? piepie
The humans in the trek universe started to become united when they realised they were not alone in the universe. Is that true, I have a vague recollection of this. If it is true then it's extremely depressing and nothing really has changed - the nations of the earth unite, but only because there's an even greater goal outside the earth, be it a threat or economic oportunity. I'd like for the nations of earth to make peace with each other inclusively, without any need of some goal outside of earth.
Soulreaper
Yes, as do I - so what are YOU doing to make this happen?
piepie
My current plan is to sit here and winge in forums until a world leader stumbles upon my post and opens his heart, or something. Entirely possible. Keep the faith and stuff.
Soulreaper
LOL - I'm starting to see why everone already gave up and became cynics :D I'll leave this be - people deserve the fate they get [read: "make for"] themselves into (without delving into too much dabbles about my conclusion) But stay positive, do great things, the best you can do and that is enough - but of course it's always "better" to strive to be and do even better! Cheers, peace out, Godspeed and so on.
MustHaveDS9
I can only hope that the populations of the world will eventually see the need for one earth governed by one socialist government, where everyones needs for food, clothing, shelter, education, and medical care are met. Unfortunately, this is the hardest part isn't it? At this point in time, all socialist governments are doomed to inadequacies because inevitably, someone finds their way into a place of power in said government and begins to game the system. Thus begins the growth of an elite class, eventually leading to the entire economic system becoming corrupt and a shadow of what it was. Hence the collapse of Soviet Russia, and the difficulties going on right now in the European Union (although the future woes of the EU are somewhat more difficult to envision right now). As long as there are still people in the world who would let the masses suffer for their own personal gain, this will never come to pass. We're at a sad point in history, where today's capitalism is actually more "fair" than today's socialism. Hopefully, this will change. Until then, we're at a bit of a dead end. MustHaveDS9
One man or woman cannot change the world alone. Mankind has no hope in the hands of the republicans... And sitting around bitching and blaming one group of people really changes the world, doesn't it?

rcazant
It is possible indeed, but it's not very likely. I think major worldwide issues could strike down mankind before they evolve into interplanetary science and traveling. issues like global warming, exhausting the planets recourses and nucleair wars will probably be the end of life as we know it. Note: I think it's quite realistic that in the Star Trek's history a Nucleair third World War is described, that changed mankind. However, my hope is, that the human race will evolve to the kind of society that the Star Trek earth people represent. Warp speed or any speed faster then light, can of course never be achieved
Beawulf
I'd like to beleive.....I think that's why I like star trek so much. We certainly have a long way to go. maverick
how do you know what the trek universe is really like? it could be a lot like the star wars universe. all we ever see is a bunch of teachers pets on a nice clean ship with nice clean rules. not everyone is like that. the real question is, is how much can we change human nature in the next few hundred years
