OK. Watched TNG this afternoon before heading to work. Forget the EP title but it was the one with the "Paclids" (they steal Geordi to fix their ship) and where the crew meets the Borg for the first time. Anyway...Q and Picard were talking about Farpoint and how Q had put the Enterprise crew on trial for the crimes of humanity. Q farted off Picard's concern saying how they had been "exonerated". Yet, as I remember, in the series final...Q stated they were still on trial. That the trial had never ended. WTF?!?

Is it just that Q's a liar?

Those are two different episodes... I forget the name of the ones with the special needs aliens (just checked - Samaritan Snare) but the first episode with the Borg is Q Who?

I believe that at the end of "Encounter At Farpoint" Q says that Humanity has been granted a stay of execution or some such, he doesn't go "yeah - we're letting you off". So, really - I assume Picard was just being a bit cheeky.

Actually, Q did say they had been exonerated in the EP with the Paclids. Then later (in another EP) said differently. That was the point I was going for. That Q is a liar.

Ah, right - Q says he exonerated them... I don't even remember that part of the episode, they overused Q so much in the first two seasons though... but there's no mention of him in the summaries of the episode, are you sure we're not talking at cross purposes because the stuff says after Q Who?, his next appearance is in Deja Q, where he's got no powers.

It seems like you're intermixing Q Who? and Samaritan snare... the rest of this post is based on the assumption the relevant episodes of discussions are "Encounter At Farpoint", "Q Who?" And "All Good Things".

Reading a summary of Encounter At Farpoint, it says that:

Q announces that humanity may have passed this test, but is destined to fail eventually

Now, as it goes... Q and Picard agree to have a trial to establish whether Humanity is as bad as Q suggests... that seems to indicate that perhaps, his various actions throughout the show were ALL trials as part of the ongoing trial... but yes, it does seem like they dropped the ball a bit on continuity if he said they'd been exonerated in that episode, only to go "actually..."

But of course, if you want to start nit picking about it - how about the fact that in Voyager solving the Continuum's problems was having a child, when it was established in "True Q" that two Qs had had a child and she had then gone on to return to the Continuum.

Other than a meta explanation, I suppose you could say something like... when Q is stripped of his powers he forgets the trial ended... either that or he just wanted to see how humanity acted once they thought they were off the hook. Personally I would say that Q's behaviour throughout TNG is quite consistent in the respect that he always seems to be testing humanity.

My impression of Q is that he's more mischievous and misrepresents things rather than being out-and-out deceitful. Not only that but I would say he is often fairly true to his word. There are several examples of him doing just fine.

true, the listener's interpretation of what Q said often makes him seem to be a liar.
