I was torn between TNG and DS9, both have different points that I really enjoy about them. I ended up going with TNG just cause its well SO good, and although it didn't have the same nice big long plot lines DS9 had, it had probably the best charachters ever. And it did so much first for the all the new series of star trek that followed.

TNG is my fav. as well. It is because of TNG that I really got into artificial intelligence which in turn made me want to study computer science and philosophy in college so that I could examine artificial intelligence from both fronts (scientific and ethical)!

The other series were good, but none compare to TNG. Great character and acting... Data is da "man"! I was Worf for Haloween when I was a kid... Picard was the best captain ever! Troi was sooo hott! I saw Riker (Jonathan Frakes) at the airport one time in Houston, Texas back in '93 or '94. Geordi's visor kicks a$$! Crusher was pretty cool, especially in that episode "Suspicions". Did I miss anyone?

What else can I say?! TNG rox!!!

Woo-hoo TNG is winning! I'm pretty sure it will always be my favorite. I know a lot of people liked DS9 for the long story 'arcs' and they've been doing a lot of that with Enterprise in season 3 and 4, but I always liked Star Trek for it's individual episodes that explore different ideas in theoretical physics or philosophy or humanity. I think TNG, Voyager and the original series did that best. The first 2 seasons of Enterprise seemed to have a lot more of that also. BTW, am I mistaken, or was the show called 'Enterprise' for the first 2 seasons, when they had the old version of the theme song, and then 'Star Trek: Enterprise' for seasons 3 and 4 when the theme song changed?

I'd say TNG with DS9 very close...

I really enjoyed DS9 but TNG wins by the margin of having slightly better characters like Picard (un-breakable) and Data.

Picard is almost too good for the survival of Star Trek as it seems "impossible" to ever find someone to fill or outgrow his shoes, though Sisko was cool and got better as he progressed (shaved his head, became less "stiff" and more human etc.) still, Picard is Picard and as you so well put it.."Data is THE man"

You are definitely NOT mistaken! I noticed that as well, and I am sure that there was a reason for it, but I don't know what it was.

1. Enterprise

2. Voyager

2. Deep Space Nine

4. TNG

5. TOS

The top four are very close for me - I couldn't choose between DS9 and Voyager.

I love the "weakness" of Enterprise; the moral dilemmas that can't always be solved by some deus ex machina teritum quid that Kirk or Picard would use to simplify a morally complex situation. I revel in Archer's lack of experience, his lack of knowledge and confidence (as compared with other captains who know the cosmos much better). He's a newbie to exploring - still excited, anticipating, not always making right decisions. Yet, he has a powerful wisdom, he's inventive, and he doesn't let his own ignorance paralyze him. He's not afraid to make hard decisions.

I've loved seeing the social evolution of Vulcans. T'Pol's growth as a character, dealing with decidedly un-Vulcan problems, has been quite interesting.

I think the chemistry of the show was there from the beginning, whereas TNG took a while to gell (I know, I quit watching the first season about half-way through, back in 1980-something). it wasn't until about season 4 or 5 that I returned to find that the show had become much more powerful.

I watched almost all of DS9 live, and about half of Voyager. I guess that means I'd rank DS9 over Voyager.

TOS I've watched in syndication on a time-available basis. It's a work of genius and it's a cornball show. I look forward to watching all the episodes, now that I can.

Now that I've demonstrated my Star Trek heresies, are you folks gonna burn me at the stake or will you grant me the tolerance inherent in the Federation?

Voyager actually is probably my second choice, and I have to say I really like the look and feel of Enterprise, and T'Pol, I like to look at T'Pol. :) I just find a lot of the stories too drawn out. I've not watched the series much live and have watched nearly every episode in just the last month or so, as I am trying to catch up before the show ends. I like the episodes where they are encountering new things and making mistakes and learning, but some of the story lines seem clumsy and contrived. The Vulcan-centric episodes here in the 4th season just seemed like 3 episodes just to make up for the fact that Jolene Blalock can't help but show emotion, and the whole Klingon genetic engineering thing just had to work too hard for it. Also in 3rd season I thought the Xindi threat was overdone for only the third year of the show. DS9 and TNG waited until the characters were very well developed before thrusting them into epic battles that could destroy the whole earth.

above all else-ST movies II, III,IV,VI,VIII and X

1-TNG

2-TOS

3-VOY

4-ENT

5-DS9

DS9 had way too much talking and not enough story. ENT has been better than DS9 in my opinion despite its short run. VOY featured a weak captain who had difficulty making the hard decisions, making it easy for her subordinates to gain the upper hand on her on too many occasions. She eventually became a despot on her own ship with a very dictatorial/clumsy command style. TOS was old but very solid considering it only ran for three seasons. TNG is by far the best, well-rounded of the ST series. It took a while for it to find its place but once it did in the 3rd season it was definitely the strongest of the series. A very strong captain and crew made it the basis for a very flexible series that easily adapted to change.

erm how do you work that out about DS9, just look at the domion wars with the battle scenes, the characters had just as much depth if not more. DS9 also paid more attention to the general life on the station and character building. Surely talking builds the story instead of seeing all flashy CGI all the time.

Enterprise is just based about its missions, it lacks feeling, it also lacks depth and humour not to mention a weak cast.

Elderbear I would probably agree with you on your thesis about Enterprise-

(and no, I thought it was a very good essay, someone not comprehending how well you put it together should be an object for the stakes so don't worry :p)

-If I had seen Enterprise, currently I haven't seen one single episode but I will once I've finished my seeding task.

Shame on me for missing Enterprise when it started going on national TV here in Sweden - but Voyager had sort of killed off my Startrek fanaticism and I had a break from Star Trek alltogether and for just a while ago recapped the entire DS9 show.

Maybe I really should give Enterprise a chance ASAP*

I'm not saying Voyager sucked, but it felt really...I have no words.. on occasion*

Got to add that I really do prefer pure DVDs a hundredthousand times against sitting by the computer, watching lame copies - I happen not to have my computer hooked up to the TV/home Theatre/Superduper Ultra TV/Vid corner (Sorry, no really flashy TV/Vid/DVD corner yet either, but my friend has!)

lol i wouldnt call the copies i have downloaded of nites site lame.....if anything there very good

Especially the NiteShdw 175s. He has made a science out of using filters to tweak the lighting and clean up any noise. They're much better than your run-of-the-mill encodes!

Hehe the 350mb encodes look pretty good on my 100+ inch screen on the wall via an overhead projector and LCD panel. Even got the room pained black to make sure the screen is nice and bright :)
