maverick
in response to percy01's fine thread regarding our future (but DO YOU BELIEVE this ? in the future .......) i have posted this thread. it seems not everyone belives the human race is capable of making such an intrepid leap, so.... in the spirit of galactic togetherness, i give you THE UNITED FEDERATION OF PLANTS we can bring together plants of all kinds. this is a hydranger, like my nan used to have. nice isnt it :D
werecow
can plants and humans live in peace together??? hopefully we will not have any disagreements which would lead to war!!! on the other hand..if relations between our species (blossoms and blooms) hee hee there could develop relationships and even marrage inter-species breeding...then where would these half-breeds fit in with society??? would we accept them with open arms or seggregate them as lower and infreior beings....OH THE HUMANITY!!!!!!! i should hope that when that moment arrives we would welcome them with all the love and compassion we as a species are able to bestow upon them!!! ......well it could happen!!! While I applaud your sentiments, it seems that certain elements of the United States Government have been involved in a war on plants for quite some time. These elements, generally calling themselves "law and order" or "pro-growth" or "supportive of business" have generally worked towards policies of destroying plants that give millions of Americans pleasure as well as providing highly lucrative sources of income to members of the so called "Third World." These neo-imperialists and their lackeys indulge in open warfare against plants. Whether through the guise of the US Forest Service leasing timber tracts (a euphemism for the wholesale slaughter of trees) for less than the cost of cleaning up after the logging, or the Bureau of Land (mis-) Management allowing overgrazing and subsequent topsoil loss, these policies have been in place for over a century. Even the most insidious policy, the so-called "War on Drugs," which targets the growers of plants, as well as their consumers (even when said growers and/or consumers use the plants medicinally). Didn't Rodney King say "Why can't we all just get along?" How is it that people can co-exist with plant in peace when the government of the most powerful nation in the world has declared war on them? Plants that could be powerful allies have become enemies! The opium poppy provides heroin, a far more effective and less addictive opiate than the synthetic morphine, yet heroin is outlawed (can't make much of a profit off a natural product) while the more viciously addictive morphine is dispensed (according to World Health Organization protocols) in emergency rooms around the country for people in extreme pain. Cocaine is one of the most effective dental anaesthetics. While its use as an optical anaesthetic is permitted and controlled, dentists no longer get to use it for any purpose. Because of consumer demand for this outlawed plant extract, the US Government supports oppressive regimes with paramilitary, special-forces, and mercenary units, working to destroy the source of peasant subsistence in its neighbors to the south. And then there's the lowly hemp plant, grown by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, outlawed by a conspiracy with William Randolph Hearst (who felt his pulpwood holdings threatened), Harry Anslinger (an incompetent bureaucratic demagogue who needed to create a new enemy to gain patronage and power - so he attacked "marihuana"), and DuPont. So instead of the more renewable, durable, and sustainable hemp (imagine nearly indestructable supermarket bags!), we now must suffer through using inferior, bleached, woodchips for our paper products. All industrialized countries (except for the open-minded folks in the Netherlands) are now deprived of the use of marijuana for recreation (how many bar fights have you heard of? how many pot fights have you heard of?) and medicinal purposes (Yes, many US states have passed laws protecting the medical users of marijuana, but the Federal Gov't insists on their unconstitutional right to regulate these intra-state matters, usurping a power reserved to the states and to the people). I could continue on and on, mentioning plants from the lowly peyote cactus (demonstrated to reduce alcoholism rates), to the mysterious ibogaine (studies show it's helpful in opiate addiction recovery and deep psychological work). But I'm running out of bits here. If you think this is polemic, then consider the possibility of satire. If you think this is satire, then realize the polemic truths contained herewithin. If you wonder what I've been smoking, the truth is nothing but tobacco (A highly addictive plant with no known medicinal value, subsidized by that same U. S. Government who makes war on so many other plants - perhaps the plants themselves are having a war and trying to suck us in!?!)
maverick
i have to say that Elderbear has some grreat points. and to add to these i will say that these plants that the governments of the world are warring with have done nothing but be abused by some over enthusiastic humans. lets be honest, no-one likes to see an addict but on the other hand, if we invite Elderbears plants to a party i think they would be generally thought of as SWEET. i find aforementioned war on theses plants disgusting and it should be stopped, and i have to say i am surprised and alarmed by the behaviour of the american president on this issue. its shocking to think he would abuse his own kind. what is george BUSH thinking of killing his cousins like he is. percy01
I don’t really believe in a better future the humans (neither for the plants)….I am not negative BUT I didn’t see any progress in the last years….are more wars, conflicts …and peace? maverick
i think from history, thta progress comes from conflict. a bit like with the prime directive of non interference. worlds have to all pretty much agree before progress can be made. since 9/11 i have seen a lot more awareness of other cultures around. perhaps this is the progress you seek. it will be a long time comin tho. what do youexpect anyway? the thing is, if your goal is a trekian future, then the timescale may seem unrealistic. if you look for longterm achievements you have to ubderstand the short term ones too so you can see the progress

MrDad
Why not PETOP (people for the ethical treatment of plants)? "Salad is murder!" The opium poppy provides heroin, a far more effective and less addictive opiate than the synthetic morphine, yet heroin is outlawed (can't make much of a profit off a natural product) while the more viciously addictive morphine is dispensed (according to World Health Organization protocols) in emergency rooms around the country for people in extreme pain. Wrong. Morphine is a natural opiate extracted from the opium poppy's sap, it is not synthetic. From Wikipedia: Heroin or diamorphine (INN) (colloquially referred to as junk, babania, horse, golden brown, smack, black tar, big H, lady H, dope, skag, juice, diesel, etc.) is an alkaloid opioid. Heroin is the 3,6-diacetyl derivative of morphine (hence diacetylmorphine) and is synthesised from it by acetylation. The white crystalline form is commonly the hydrochloride salt, diamorphine hydrochloride. It is highly addictive. Heroin was first synthesised in 1874 by C.R.A. Wright, a British chemist working at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School, London. He had been experimenting with combining morphine with various acids. He boiled anhydrous morphine alkaloid with acetic anhydride over a stove for several hours and produced a more potent, acetylated form of morphine. We now call it diacetylmorphine. The compound was sent to F.M. Pierce of Owens College, Manchester, for analysis. He reported the following to Wright. Doses ... were subcutaneously injected into young dogs and rabbits ... with the following general results ... great prostration, fear, and sleepiness speedily following the administration, the eyes being sensitive, and pupils dilated, considerable salivation being produced in dogs, and slight tendency to vomiting in some cases, but no actual emesis. Respiration was at first quickened, but subsequently reduced, and the heart's action was diminished, and rendered irregular. Marked want of coordinating power over the muscular movements, and loss of power in the pelvis and hind limbs, together with a diminution of temperature in the rectum of about 4° [1] (http://adhpage.dilaudid.net/heroin.html) Heinrich Dreser (who discovered aspirin), of Bayer in Elberfeld, Germany, noticed that diacetylmorphine was more potent than morphine. Bayer registered Heroin (meaning 'heroic treatment' from the German word heroisch) as a trademark. From 1898 through to 1910 it was marketed as a non-addictive morphine substitute and cough medicine for children. As with Aspirin, Bayer lost some of its trademark rights to Heroin following World War I. In 1924 the Harrison Narcotics Tax Act made it illegal to manufacture or possess heroin in the United States. str82u
On a serious note, I don't know about the future of humanity, I have an opinion yes, but no theory (is that possible?) What I mean is, How do we know what would happen if our planet were still in shock from a huge devasting (Third World) War, then a scientifc/mechanical breakthrough making it possible to explore the galaxy attracted an intelligent ALIEN species, who decided to make thier presence known and become buddies. What would you think? Pettiness is powerful and all consuming, like alcoholism or other addictions, would people give that up and become one species instead of several races of the same? If our government is that petty about plants... This is so good, I'm posting it elsewhere.
